2 Canalway Partners is a 501(c)3 organization tasked with building the Towpath Trail and ancillary parks including Canal Basin Park in Cuyahoga County and we co-manage the stewardship of the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area with the Ohio & Erie Canalway Coalition. Our mission is to create a park system that follows the route of the historic Ohio Canal from Cleveland through Zoar to Dover/New Philadelphia by promoting historic preservation and interpretation, expanded recreational opportunities and sensitive economic development. We focus our work in four major areas: Recreation, Nature, Culture and the History of the Canalway. We accomplish our mission through many strategies, including hosting events and diverse activities that increase public awareness and engagement. These include running races, cycle events, and environmental clean-ups. We seek sponsorships to help promote our activities and events to further our mission.

3 What is a National Heritage Area?
National Heritage Areas (NHAs) are designated by Congress as places where natural, cultural, and historic resources combine to form a cohesive, nationally important landscape. Through their resources, NHAs tell nationally important stories that celebrate our nation’s diverse heritage. NHAs are lived-in landscapes. Consequently, NHA entities collaborate with communities to determine how to make heritage relevant to local interests and needs. NHAs are a grassroots, community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development. Through public-private partnerships, NHA entities support historic preservation, natural resource conservation, recreation, heritage tourism, and educational projects. Leveraging funds and long-term support for projects, NHA partnerships foster pride of place and an enduring stewardship ethic. The Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area is 110-mile district from Cleveland’s lakeshore to New Philadelphia, Ohio, in the south. It includes the 101-mile Towpath Trail and Canal Basin Park in Cleveland. Our NHA focuses on three main stories: the building of the canal and it’s impact on the region and the state, the gilded age of economic growth, and the environmental redemption story of the burning of the Cuyahoga River which led to the Clean Water Act and the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency.

April 8 Towpath Half-Marathon (First race in Towpath Trilogy) The first race of the Towpath Trilogy, featuring three-mile, five-mile and half- marathon race lengths. May 12 RiverSweep Ohio’s largest done-in-a-day cleanup event in the Cuyahoga River Valley June 2 Cycle Canalway Riders take the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to the stop of their choice and bike along the Towpath Trail, with lunch and entertainment at the finish June 17 Towpath Ten-Ten (second race in Towpath Trilogy) 10 miler and 10K races on Father’s Day along the Towpath Trail October 7 Towpath Marathon (Final race in Towpath Trilogy) One of NE Ohio’s premier marathons attracting people from over 27 states and from other countries.

8 Towpath Trilogy Canalway Partners created the first race on the Towpath Trail in 1992, the Towpath Marathon, to introduce the trail as a new recreational amenity and to promote the establishment of the Ohio & Erie Canalway. Since its inception the Towpath Marathon has grown to become one of Northeast Ohio’s premier marathons, attracting thousands of participants and spectators from more than forty-four states and five countries for a weekend of outdoor festivities and athletic competition. Between 2010 to 2011, Canalway Partners rounded out the fall marathon with the Towpath Half-Marathon in the spring and the Towpath in the summer, creating a trilogy of races that allows runners the opportunity to experience the Towpath in different seasons. Runners who complete the challenge of the Towpath Trilogy win a beer mug at the end of the Towpath Marathon (final race) and are treated to free beer in the VIP tent after the race.

9 Towpath Marathon Canalway Partners hosts the Towpath Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K every fall in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Described as “one of the most beautiful race courses in America” by Runner’s World magazine, the Towpath Marathon showcases breathtaking segments of the historic Towpath Trail located between Akron and Cleveland. The Towpath Marathon is one of few marathons that take place in a national park, and many consider it a unique specialty race due to the setting and time of year in which it is run. All proceeds from the event benefit Canalway Partners, an organization that has been actively developing and participating in a variety of events and projects to preserve, promote and educate the public about the area surrounding one of Northeast Ohio’s most valuable resources – our park system along the Ohio Canal.

10 RiverSweep RiverSweep is Ohio’s largest done-in-a-day cleanup effort. Each year on the Saturday before Mother’s Day, local businesses, schools, and idividuals team up to clean our shared backyard. Over the course of 27 years we have recruited 19,108 volunteers who have helped us extract and recycle 24,044 illegally discarded tires and picked up for disposal 623 tons of trash. In 2016 alone, 950 volunteers removed over 80 tons of trash, including 475 tires. In 2015, we added a new graffiti clean-up component to RiverSweep to help beautify the area. Businesses support us by sponsoring our event, sending us volunteers, and/or picking a site that means something to the company. For 2017, RiverSweep will target nine areas for cleanup that include: The Flats Train Avenue/ Walworth Run Mill Creek Falls Treadway Ravine Tremont West Creek Big Creek Johnston Mill Run Morgana Run The impact of RiverSweep on the community is undeniable. New parks and trails have emerged in areas formerly targeted for illegal dumping.

11 Cycle Canalway Cycle Canalway is a bike event for the whole family. This fundraiser helps Canalway Partners preserve, promote, and educate the public about the area surrounding one of our region’s most valuable resources. The Towpath Trail and the ancillary park systems that run along the Ohio & Erie Canal. Riders will take the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad to the stop of their choice (our last stop will be Peninsula) and bike along the beautiful Towpath Trail, finishing at Quaker Steak in Valley View for lunch and entertainment. It’s a great way for both new and experienced cyclists to get out and enjoy the trails and support the organization that is working to finish the Towpath Trail project.

12 Towpath 150 Towpath 150 is our newest event that takes cyclists on an adventure from Cleveland to Bolivar on an overnight trip and back. Riders will travel the length of Towpath in the Ohio & Erie Canalway National Heritage Area, taking in the sites along the way. Riders register for the event but are also encouraged to fundraise. All proceeds from the event go to support Canalway Partners in the development of the Towpath Trail in Cleveland and Cuyahoga County.
