Literacy Each term the children will be taught a unit of narrative, poetry and non-fiction. During the autumn term, class 3 will read and write adventure stories, design limericks and write recounts. Spring term’s narrative unit looks at traditional stories and/or fairy stories. In our poetry unit, we will be reading and writing haikus and tanka. In non-fiction, the children will learn how to write explanations. In the summer term, narrative will cover plays and playscripts. Poetry will cover various poets and developing an appreciation for them. The non-fiction unit will be persuasive letters. Grammar, punctuation, spelling and handwriting will be taught throughout the week. The children will be expected to apply their literacy skills in all their writing tasks.

Reading Guided Reading will take place everyday, with one group reading to and working with the teacher. All other groups will be carrying out independent activities. During the week the teacher will hear every child read. A record will be kept of home reads.

Maths Each term, the children will build on their knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts. Numeracy in year 3 will be taught daily and, over the week, will include mental maths and rapid recall activities. These activities help to identify the needs of individual children and supports future planning. Changes in the national curriculum mean that year 3 children will also be taught Roman numerals to twelve.

Science Throughout the whole year, regardless of the unit the children are studying, they will be taught to work scientifically; carrying out experiments, hypothesising and making predictions about their findings. Over the course of the year, class 3 will investigate ‘Light’, ‘Magnets and Forces’ and ‘Rocks’. They will be encouraged to take part in practical lessons whenever possible and it is hoped that lessons will also be taught in the outdoor area (weather permitting). In the spring term the class will be visiting the Science museum.

Religious Education In R.E. the children will be taught the unit ‘What does it mean to be a Christian in Britain today’. In the spring term the class have the opportunity to study What other religion believe about god and learn the importance of Easter. Why people pray and The bible are our summer units.

History History will be taught later in the year were we will be learning about the ‘Stone age to Iron age’ period. In the summer term we will be moving on to undertaking a local history study of Essex. Investigating the origins of how Essex became a county and why is has played an important part in many areas of industry. Geography Geography looking at our map skills. We will also link it to our science subject of rocks when we look at why the world rumbles.

Design and Technology During the spring term the children will be looking at cooking, thinking about the importance of a good diet. They will also plan and cook an easy recipe. Please encourage children to read recipe books which will support the unit and extend their reading experiences.

Art This term our art work will be based on the work of Van Gogh. In summer, the children will be learning how to create sculptures using different techniques (clay, mod rock, paper mache etc)

Music We will be following the Charanga scheme of work, which will include investigating descriptive sounds, exploring rhythmic patterns and arrangements (i.e. a class orchestra).

French In French we will be following the Rigalo scheme of work, which will introduce the children to the basics of French.

P.E. Class 3 will be doing P.E. each week on a Monday afternoon. We are learning the rules of invasion games, practising our gymnastic skills, learning dance, competing in indoor and outdoor athletics and taking part in striking and fielding games. Swimming will take place on a Friday morning.

Homework Please listen to your child read at home at least three times a week as agreed in the Home/School Agreement. There will also be spellings and times tables to learn each week in preparation for in class tests.
