Ric Bessin
2
Change in Pesticide Education Management
Dr. T transitioning away from PAT (PSEP) Lee has done an outstanding job with little support Bessin taking over PAT My goal Making it the best program it can be To support agents
3
What are the Changes to PAT?
5
Major Changes in the Draft Proposal
Fees to become private applicators, collected by agents Requires KDA support to open KAR’s Fees to access training manuals Requires developing new manuals Fees to received Commercial CEU’s Many meetings out of our control
6
Who makes up our Clientele?
Private Applicators ~15,000 Commercial Applicators ~15,000 Primarily ag producers Industrial, Institutional, Structural and Health Related (7,507) Ornamental and Turf (3,821) Right-of-Way (2,216)
7
Training Strategies Core and category specific manuals on line
Private Applicators Commercial Applicators Core manual on line On-line training videos Classroom training by agents Certification god for 3 years Testing if requested No fee Retrain every 3 years Core and category specific manuals on line KDA administered testing $25 9 general/ 3 category specific hours of CEU needed every 3 years

Private Applicator Competence
Recognize common pests and damage caused Read and understand the label (pesticide common names, pests controlled, timing/methods of application, safety precautions, PHI/REI, disposal procedures) Apply pesticides in according to label instructions (proper concentration taking into account area to be covered, speed at which application equipment will be driven, and the quantity used in given period) Recognize local environmental situations to avoid contamination Recognize poisoning symptoms and procedures to follow Know standards for the supervision of noncertified persons Understand the Worker Protection Standards Use personal protective equipment for handling of pesticides Understand the standards for storage of pesticides

Video Releases/Updates
2017 – 5 2016 – 12 2015 – 10 2014 – 10 2013 – 34 Goal to have new videos/updates every 3 years (minimum) Insect/disease/weeds/products
14
Need: To routinely replace older videos
Create a mini-grants program ($ /video) Annually there would be a call for proposals on targeted topics Involve more specialists and agent in developing materials ½ page proposals would include Learning objects Questions for evaluation Each video would be vetted by specialists/agents Sources of funding? Means of supporting agents?
15
Discussion How can we better support you? New topics for videos?
Needed video update/replacement? Support for hands-on/classroom training Doing more with Zoom/Skype annually Insect/disease/weeds/products Who are using the test?
