Indiana Code: "Bullying" Sec (a) As used in this chapter, "bullying" means overt, unwanted, repeated acts or gestures, including verbal or written communications or images transmitted in any manner (including digitally or electronically), physical acts committed, aggression, or any other behaviors, that are committed by a student or group of students against another student with the intent to harass, ridicule, humiliate, intimidate, or harm the targeted student and create for the targeted student an objectively hostile school environment

4. Bullying vs Inappropriate behavior
There are a lot of inappropriate behaviors that are not bullying. They are common occurrences, but may not be considered bullying.
They do still need to be addressed!
When we overuse the term bullying to label inappropriate student behavior, we water down the seriousness of the term “bullying.”

Social networking web sites (facebook, twitter)

According to middle school age students and teenagers, the fastest growing problems within the world of cyberbullying are:
Stealing an individual’s name and password to a social networking site, then using their profile to post rumors, gossip or other damaging information.
Altering photographs using PhotoShop or other photo editing software in order to humiliate the individual.
Recording conversations without the individual’s knowledge or consent, then posting the call online.
Creating confrontational and mean-spirited online polls about the individual and posting them on different web sites.
Using web sites and blogs to post hurtful, embarrassing information about another individual.

Tips for Safety on Internet
Doing the following will help prevent cyberbullying:
Do not share your log-in info. With friends.
Only accept people you know on social networking sites.
Be sure to record and report to parents/guardians, trusted adult inappropriate messages/posts you receive.
Use privacy settings available for the account.
Do NOT post personal information, photos and private information. NEVER post your address, phone number, age, or full name. Keep identifiable information out of your username (use a nickname rather than first and last name) 7

Other crimes committed based on their sex, gender, race, or religion
Sexting, child pornography

1 out of 4 students reported being bullied during the school year. (NCED, 2015)
64% of students bullied did not report it. (IES, 2010)
57% stop the bullying when a peer steps in to stop it. (Hawkings, et al )
Suicide is the third leading cause of death from (CDC, 2010)

Pretend you didn’t hear them
Don’t even look at them
Turn and walk away
Don’t show emotion
Don’t get angry or cry
Don’t show them that you are upset
Remember you are not the one with the problem, The bully is
Take action
Turn the comment into a joke
Respond to the bully evenly and firmly
Get out of the situation and
get help from an adult

13. Ways to avoid future bullying
Don’t bring expensive things or money to school.
Label your belongings with permanent marker in case they get stolen.
Avoid unsupervised areas.
Sit near the bus driver on the bus.
Act confident. Hold your head up, stand up straight, and make eye contact.
Don’t walk alone. Travel with at least one other person.
Avoid places where bullying happens.
