Do Now: Analyze the map of China in front of you. Based on our previous discussions of geography, list three predictions you have about how the geographical features in this civilization helped to influence its development.

D. Majority of Chinese live in the east, near these rivers.

Northern and western frontiers are covered by mountains and deserts. This will influence China’s development in many ways:
- Isolated from other civilizations (no cultural diffusion – spread of cultural beliefs and practices from one place to another)
- Ethnocentrism
- Xenophobia (fear of foreigners)
- China dubs itself “The Middle Kingdom”
