Learning Objectives Identify the steps for eliciting concerns and conducting developmental surveillance and screening with families from culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) backgrounds. Know how to discuss the outcomes of developmental and/or autism screening with CLD families. Understand cultural & linguistic considerations when discussing developmental delays and autism with CLD families. A key part of the screening process includes communicating results of the screening tool to parents. This can be a highly emotional experience, particularly if the screener has detected concerns. Good communication skills are essential to help parents understand concerns and ensure their child sees appropriate specialists. It is important for clinicians to understand how different childrearing practices and cultural norms may influence key decisions that parents make regarding their child including obtaining evaluations and treatment, future planning, and acceptance of the child’s diagnosis.
