1 ATTACHMENT A BEAUMONT ECD Framework Update Presenter: Kathy Crothers, ECD Consultant Thank you for the opportunity to present an update for the Beaumont ECD Framework Development. It is easier to build STRONG CHILDREN than to repair BROKEN MEN Frederick Douglas

2 VISION Children and families in Beaumont have the support they need to thrive and succeed MISSION The Beaumont ECD Coalition is Diverse, Inclusive and Innovative GOALS The Beaumont ECD Coalition strives to promote awareness of ECD through collaboration to influence positive change The Vision, Mission and Goals have been developed by the ECD Coalition for alignment in the practise of developing a framework.

3 The Beaumont Early Childhood Coalition believes that in order to raise a child many essential elements need to be considered: Pre-natal supports Post-natal supports including immunization Municipal commitment and collaboration Nurturing environments Cross Ministry collaboration between Health, Human Services and Education The Beaumont Early Childhood Coalition has been in existence for almost 8 years which makes it one of the longest in existence ECD Coalitions in the province. Prenatal Supports and Post Natal Immunization are essential for healthy living and a well informed medical life long journey. Municipal Dedication and Collaboration is the true meaning of a Village Raising a Village. Thanks to The Town of Beaumont for being Innovative Nurturing Environments are when families feel connected, confident and safe Cross Ministry - ECCA Early Childhood Coalition Association

4 FRAMEWORK The Early Childhood Development Framework is:
A roadmap for where we want to go Guides decision making Set future direction Identifies important connections Supports alignments of policies and practices Identifies shifts, changes, successes and challenges in what is already in place Most of the initial work in this project has been creating an solid understanding of what a FRAME WORK is. Given the changes in the economy and general population of the Town of Beaumont the Framework project is almost like a LIVING DOCUMENT. Beaumont is a very progressive community who are generally interested in evidence based principles and the engagement process.

5 WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE Increased knowledge and awareness of ECD
Motivation and inspiration for all Availability and accessibility of services for all Increased healthy lifestyle behaviours for all Healthy and nutritious eating Increased number of children ready to learn when beginning school A vibrant village ready to raise a child Our goal is to be as diverse in our work as possible. We have been targeting some usual suspects and have been pleasantly surprised at their by in, of the importance of The Early Years. The needs assessment as a real booster!

These are the connections that have the grass roots knowledge about the children and families in Beaumont. More importantly they provide insight as to what the successes, strengths, issues and challenges are in the community.

7 RESOURCES AND GUIDES The ECMAP Project: How are our young children doing – Community Profiles Early Development Instrument • 5 developmental domains Beaumont Needs Assessment Strengthening Families – Center for Social Policy Alberta Family Wellness • The Core Brain Story • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACES) Alberta’s Social Policy Framework Center for the Developing Child Harvard University Cultivating A Community for All St. Albert’s Social Master Plan Early Childhood Coalition Association (ECCA) Family & Community Support Services Alberta Association Early Child Development Support Services (ECDSS) World Health Organization (WHO) ECMAP – Early Childhood Mapping Research Project EDI – Early Development Inventory In Connection with other community’s and resources are an integral component to the project. We’ve looked at the professional field first for inspiration.

8 COLLABORATION How influential have we been?
The coalition has improved the way they work together There is an increased understanding about each others work Community understands the importance of evaluation A stronger focus on quality of work in general in the ECD world A strong connection and collaboration with the child care centres in Beaumont. Three child care centres attend most coalition meetings Strong relationships within the coalition back bone team and working groups There are now workshops at the child care centres for both parents and staff The coalition coordinator has connected with a huge number of parents and families within the community

9 WHATS NEXT? Completion of Beaumont Early Childhood Development Framework – December 31, 2017, for presentation to council – Winter 2018 Continue to support and connect with parents and families Collaborate with Leduc Regional Coalition to host Deborah MacNamara for professional development Work with École Saint-Vital to provide a French Facilitator Training “Kids Have Stress Too” Connect with child care service providers, preschools, kindergartens and local parenting groups to provide support, connections and training Bring together seniors and families for more events Continue to connect the child cares and support them in maintaining their competencies Bring to the community a broader picture of the provincial and national initiatives to become a leader and innovator in raising a healthy village
