KIOS Open Knowledge: A pillar for excellence
Dr. Demetrios Eliades Research Associate
2
KIOS Center of Excellence
Over 100 researchers working in a multidisciplinary environment (~200 by 2023) Over 70 externally funded research projects since 2008 Excellent research record Expertise in technology transfer Industrial collaborations KIOS CoE: A strategic partnership between the University of Cyprus and Imperial College London Publishing more than 100 papers, posters, presentations and code per year
3
KIOS CoE Vision To become a world-class centre of excellence for multidisciplinary research and innovation in the area of intelligent systems and networks with emphasis on monitoring, control, management and security of critical infrastructures, for the benefit of the society and economy of Cyprus and Europe.
4
KIOS CoE Strategic Pillars
5
KIOS Open Knowledge Openly disseminate published scientific results beyond the traditional academic dissemination channels Ensure that these results achieve maximum visibility to other researchers Motivate others to build on-top of our work
6
Portal Features Link to projects: Connect to H2020 projects (for automating the Participant Portal reporting requirements) Link with other document versions, research data, code, posters, presentations Link to the KIOS GitHub code repository Upload research data related to publications Accessible to KIOS CoE researchers at Imperial API to extract information for KPI monitoring Altmetrics for each paper
7
Steps towards Open Knowledge
Preparation of Standard Operating Procedures Open Access & Open Research Data Data & Knowledge Management Plans Established the Zenodo Community KIOS Open Knowledge Portal KIOS Open Access Committee (3 Post-docs) Information day for all KIOS Researchers Clear step-by-step guidelines Identified common mistakes and update procedures
8
The path from research to OA
Project Dissemination Plan Publications (Green/Gold Open Access) Research Research Results Protection of Intellectual Property needed? Publication and Open Access Dissemination KIOS Open Knowledge Policy Project Data Management Plan Research Data (Open, Restricted)
9
KIOS Open Access Policy
All Accepted Pre-prints of journals and conference publications produced after 1/1/2017 must be made available online as soon as they are accepted and not later than 6 months. Pre-prints of journals/conference publications may be made available as soon as the paper is submitted for review.

KIOS Open Knowledge Portal
11
Outline of guidelines Login using ORCID account
Select publication type & upload document Links to IEEE services for downloading OA versions What if the paper is already under OA? DOI: when to create or reuse existing one e.g. from arXiv Special OA requirements for IEEE, Springer etc e.g. “The final publication is available at Springer via DOI]”. Zenodo Communities: KIOS & Cyprus H2020 Grant titles Link to related documents e.g. document identical on Lekythos, previous version of [IEEE]

A KIOS article in OA
16
Altmetrics
17
Challenges ORCID accounts for all researchers
Train researchers in understanding who has the copyright for each document version Handling problems: Wrong document versions (which may violate copyright) Wrong funding acknowledgement Incorrect DOI Missing note for IEEE, Springer etc Contact researchers to request modifications Large flow of papers
18
Key Ingredients for Success
Open Access to papers and research data is a key pillar for scientific excellence Researchers need to have clear guidelines Leadership must fully support OA Researchers need to be trained Curators need to have expertise in the different types of documents, licences, publisher guidelines
