Doctrine of Continual Cleansing I John 1:7
1 John 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.
4
Continual Cleansing As an idea it suggests: We are cleansed as long as we are in Christ As a doctrine it suggests: We commit sins from day to day, possibly in ignorance, that we may not need to repent from, so long as we generally abide in Christ The doctrinal passages: I John 1:7, Romans 8:1-4
5
Continual Cleansing Examples of the doctrine expressed: “a Christian with the proper attitude of heart is forgiven--even as he sins” “a Christian need not know the sins he is guilty of in order to be forgiven” “a Christian still sins and is still a sinner”
6
Continual Cleansing Point of the doctrine: A “Security of the Believer” ideology Similar to “Once Saved, Always Saved” Some sins are worse than others Sins that we commit in ignorance, or nominal Sins that remove us from fellowship in Christ

Problems Created by a Doctrine of Continual Cleansing
It creates an unstated distinction in types of sin Matthew 23:23 "Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cummin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others.”

Problems Created by a Doctrine of Continual Cleansing
It creates an unstated distinction in types of sin It creates a purpose in NOT studying the Truth 2 Timothy 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. Consider that Grace GROWS with knowledge 2 Peter 3:18 grow in the grace and knowledge
9
Problems Created by a Doctrine of Continual Cleansing
It creates an unstated distinction in types of sin It creates a purpose in NOT studying the Truth It nullifies the need for confession and repentance 2 Corinthians 7:10 For godly sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted;

Problems Created by a Doctrine of Continual Cleansing
It creates an unstated distinction in types of sin It creates a purpose in NOT studying the Truth It nullifies the need for confession and repentance It renders our salvation apart from knowledge 2 Peter 1:3 His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue,
11
The Rules of Christian Pardon
Purpose of 1 John 1: to establish that our salvation requires spiritual conduct and repentance - We must confess our sins – I John 1: We must repent of our sins – Romans 6:2-6
12
The Rules of Christian Pardon
Ignorance has never excused sin Leviticus 5:17 "If a person sins, and commits any of these things which are forbidden to be done by the commandments of the LORD, though he does not know it, yet he is guilty and shall bear his iniquity.”
13
There IS Security for a Believer
2 Peter 1:10 Therefore, brethren, be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you; for as long as you practice these things, you will never stumble; What things? 2 Peter 1:5-11
14
There IS Security for a Believer
What about sins about which we have forgotten? Psalm 25:7 Do not remember the sins of my youth or my transgressions; according to Your lovingkindness remember me, for Your goodness' sake, O LORD. - Repentance means right action in all ways - He will cleanse us of ALL unrighteousness - We study to learn the truth (as Josiah did)

Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility Jesus did: Matthew 5:48 "Therefore you shall be perfect, just as your Father in heaven is perfect.” Matthew 19:21 Jesus said to him, "If you want to be perfect, go, sell what you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.“ The world says “Nobody’s perfect”. Does the Bible teach this?
16
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility Paul did Ephesians 4:13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; Colossians 1:28 Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus.
17
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility James did James 1:4 But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 3:2 For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.
18
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility Peter did 1 Peter 5:10 But may the God of all grace, who called us to His eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after you have suffered a while, perfect, establish, strengthen, and settle you.
19
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility John did 1 John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
20
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
The Bible teaches “Perfectionism” as a possibility NO WHERE does the Bible deny we can be perfect At the moment you are baptized, you are perfect At the moment you confess your sins, you are perfect
21
Are We Preaching Perfectionism
But what about our spiritual weaknesses? This is why the church is SO IMPORTANT Galatians 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted.
22
Spiritual Maturity & Forgiveness
God may choose to overlook sins we cannot repent Luke 18:13-14 The man who slips at the baptistery The man who curses in his death If He does it is ONLY because we strive for perfection Such as Josiah’s position REPENTANCE is the only means of removing sin we have guaranteed to aid us
24
The Hope of the Scriptures:
Romans 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.
25
The Hope of the Scriptures:
You must believe on Jesus Christ (Mark 16:16) You must confess that belief (Romans 10:9) You must repent of your sins (Acts 2:38) Your must be baptized (I Peter 3:21) You must remain faithful (Revelation 2:10)
