Powerpoints are not a complete set of notes – you should add as we work through the units. Next slide shows you different print methods if you choose to print them.

13 Different Print Methods

14 Be able to answer the discussion questions in the powerpoint
Be able to answer the discussion questions in the powerpoint. (We do answer them in class.) You always read the text before the lesson – keep the ppt open as you read to see connections on what we will be covering class the following day. Write down any questions or vocabulary words you do not understand. Ask in class.

15 How to Study Removing Distractions
Knowing Your Learning Style: Auditory, Visual, Kinesthetic Reviewing vs Studying Reviewing should be done each night before the homework assignment begins. Briefly look over notes, ppt, homework etc. to keep important information fresh in your mind. Studying = Reteaching How do I know what to study? You need to find out what you don’t know. Student Mistake #1: Re-read and try to memorize whole powerpoint and spend hours on EVERYTHING. Correct Answer: Using the review sheet, returned homework and/or Castle Learning, quiz yourself to determine what events, vocabulary, etc you don’t understand. THIS is what you focus your study time on. The reset you can “review.”

16 How to Study Student Mistake #2 – Thinking Quizzes and Tests are the Enemy Quizzes and tests are invaluable resources to students. YES, YOU READ THAT RIGHT. Quizzes help you to determine before a test if you are understanding the material, vocabulary etc. Exams help you to see if you have mastered the content and gives you feedback on your skill building. It is THEREFORE HIGHLY ENCOURAGED you look over all returned assessments and meet with me if you want to go over anything. Rewrites of essays as practice is highly encouraged CONCLUSION: Look at assessments in this class as a positive thing. If you feel you are struggling we can meet and come up with a plan to help you feel more successful.

17 From WSJ Article FIVE WAYS TO HONE YOUR STUDY SKILLS
Find out what the test will cover and the kinds of questions it will include. Start at least a few days before the test to plan how and when you will study. Identify helpful resources such as practice tests or instructors’ office hours to assist with material you don’t understand. Practice recalling facts and concepts by quizzing yourself. Limit study sessions to 45 minutes to increase your concentration and focus. smarter-ways-to-study
