MISSION INTEGRITY Is there identity consensus rooted in common values? Can this consensus be easily expressed? Is the identity celebrated in word and action by all constituencies?

Vision Statement Ball State University will be a national model of excellence for challenging, learner-centered academic communities that advance knowledge and improve economic vitality and quality of life.

Mission Ball State University is an innovative, supportive academic community that inspires students by: –Offering action-oriented learning, including immersive out-of-class experiences, research, and study abroad. –Providing extraordinary access to and collaboration with professors who create scholarship to advance knowledge, improve teaching, and transform learning. –Engaging state, national, and international communities to enhance educational, economic, and cultural development.

ASSIGNMENT # 1 Express the vision and mission statements in one sentence – better yet, one phrase -- that front-line personnel in your division can live in their daily actions.

PLANNING Do we have a demonstrable planning process? Do the plans that emerge establish institutional priorities and guide funding, consistent with our values and identity? Do prioritized plans guide operational decision- making? Does planning reflect environmental realities? Have we created metrics for assessment and course correction?

LEARNING Learning defines an organizational capacity. We provide opportunities for learning (e.g., teaching, consulting) We must be learners (e.g., scholarship) BUT ALSO through interaction with constituencies. How open are we to the evolution implied by organizational learning?

ASSIGNMENT # 2 Think of a front-line person in your division. How would you help that person understand his or her job as contributing to Ball State as a learning organization?

ASSESSMENT We are the primary consumers of assessment data. How do we recognize and measure success? How do we learn from failure? How do we convert failure into success in the future?

ENGAGEMENT We do not live in an ivory tower. We engage the world around us. How does our engagement change that world? How are we changed by our engagement?
