1 Space: Cooperation in space
-Can anyone tell me what it means to cooperate with someone? -What do you think cooperation in space means? Thursday November 23rd, 2017

2 Cooperation in Space: When people first started entering space, it was a competition. During the Cold War, Russia and the United States were trying to enter space. As they were in the middle of a war, their space programs were very secretive, and there was no cooperation. -unchartered territory and there was a competition to see who could be the first to discover it.

3 Cooperation in space: The Cold War ended in and things began to change. Along with many other countries, the United States and Russia now work together and participate in a cooperative space program.

4 The International space station (iss):
This cooperation between countries was evident when the International Space Station (ISS) was founded. Many countries were involved in the building of the ISS and have contributed to various missions onboard the ISS. The following are countries involved in the ISS:

5 Activity: As we look at the countries involved in the ISS locate them on your world map. Please COLOUR and LABLE them as we go.

6 The united states-Nasa
NASA- (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) Have been putting humans into space for 40+ years. Gives a lot of money for various projects (i.e., unity connector node, spacehab cargo module) ~$24.7 billion. -The unity connector node was the first US build component of the ISS. It is one of three.

7 Russia Have been putting humans into space for 40+ years.
Masters of space stations. Zvezda service module (first living quarters). Soyuz return capsule; two docking compartments for Soyuz; universal docking module that includes living quarters, docking and stowage module -Soyuz was a series of spacecraft's designed for the Soviet Space Programs

8 Canada: CSA- Canadian Space Agency Our strength is in space robotics.
Gave $1.2 billion dollars for a 55-foot-long mobile robot Canadarm and smaller Canada Hand, mobile cart that moves along tracks on ISS backbone, astronauts. -Can anyone tell me what the Canadarm is? - the Canadarm is a series of robotic ares that were used on the space shuttle orbiters to deploy and maneuver different things throughout space.

9 Japan: Potential for making the ISS cheaper, better, and faster.
Gave $3.1 billion dollars for Kibo experiment cargo module, experiment racks, foot robotic arm, external platform. -Kibo: is a Japanese science module for the International Space Station (ISS) developed by JAXA. It is the largest single ISS module.  - Experiment Racks include a clean bench glove box with microscope that isolates the organisms being studied

10 Brazil: Their strength was creating new and innovative ideas that displayed future potential. Gave $200 million dollars for an outside moveable experiment pallet  Supplied a window observational research facility that used data and power connections to perform observations of the Earth.

11 Europe: Strength in numbers: European Space Agency (ESA) includes 11 different countries. Gave $3.83 billion dollars for Columbus laboratory module which allowed scientists the opportunity to conduct experiments in zero gravity, which is impossible to do so on Earth.
