Actively Incorporating Health Content
How do we add all this new health content to our classes when we already have limited time with students?
3
GERM TAG These SOL’s cover the spread of germs and diseases
K.1 h, K.2 g, K.3 g 1.1 d, 1.2d 2.1 f, 2.3 e 3.1 g 4.1 j, 4.2 h 5.1 j, 5.2 k, 5.3 d
4
GERM TAG Explain to the students that germs can be anywhere and they are so small that we can’t see them. In order to get all the germs off their hands they need to wash with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
5
GERM TAG Students will start in their own personal space. At one end of the gym you will set up two mats standing on there side. One mat will be the boys bathroom and the other the girls bathroom. Germ carriers will start in the center circle (quarantine). When the music starts germ carriers will tag other students with either a noodle or a ball. If a student is infected they must go to the bathroom and wash their hand while singing either the ABC’s or Happy Birthday to themselves. When they are finished they may return to the playing area.
6
Plickers Question #1 How long should you wash your hands?
A – 10 seconds B – 20 seconds C – 30 seconds D – 60 seconds
7
Doctor Dash These SOL’s cover the differences between non-prescription and prescription medication and how to use those medication properly K.1 f, K.2 e, f, K.3 f 1.1 f, 1.2 k,l, 1.3 I 2.1 f,g, 2.2 k, 2.3 e,f 3.1 h, 3.2 d, 3.3 d
8
Doctor Dash Talk to the students about the differences between prescription and non-prescription medication. Explain proper use of these medications
9
Doctor Dash Students will start in personal space. On one end of the gym you will have a space set aside as the pharmacy. On the other end of the gym you will have a space set up as a hospital. There will be two types of taggers. One set of taggers will have a noodle (common cold). The other set of taggers will have a ball and they will be strep throat (bacterial disease). If a student is tagged by the noodle they will go straight to the pharmacy and get some non- prescription medication (10 Jumping Jacks). If they get tagged by the ball they will have to go to the hospital where you will be the doctor handing out exercise prescription cards. They must complete those exercises at the hospital before they are allowed to return to the game.
10
Plickers Question #2 You must see a doctor before you can receive prescription medication. A – TRUE B - FALSE

Sun Protection Tag These SOL’s discuss the health risks that are associated with unprotected sun- exposure. They help you to determine and identify strategies that will protect you from the harmful effects of the sun. K.2 l 1.3 h 5.1 b 5.2 a 5.3 a
12
Sun Protection Tag Discuss the dangers of unprotected sun exposure.
Ask students to name as many ways as they can to protect our skin, and eyes from dangerous UV Rays.
13
Sun Protection Tag Place a few hula-hoops around the gym floor. One student will start in the middle of the gym with the large volleyball trainer (Sun). A few students will have either sunglasses or a bottle of sunblock. Those students cannot be tagged because they are protected by the sun. On the teachers signal the sun will chase the students around the beach. If they are tagged they get a really bad sunburn and can’t move. If a student with sunglasses or the sunblock hands their item to the sunburned student they become protected and can then go give the item to another student that is burned. The hula-hoops represent shade where students can be temporarily protected. They may only stay in the shade for 5 seconds. They may not go to the same shady spot twice in a row. Switch the student or students that represent the sun every couple minutes.

Nutrition Know it All Health: 4.1 d,e,f 5.1 e P.E.: 3.5 a,d,e
These SOL’s cover identifying macronutrients and discussing their impact our growth, development and physical performance. They also cover identifying the calories provided by each macronutrient. Health: 4.1 d,e,f 5.1 e P.E.: 3.5 a,d,e 4.5 a,c,d 5.5 f
15
Nutrition Know it All Discuss the macronutrients and how they impact our growth, development, and physical performance. Discuss the calories in each gram of macronutrient.
16
Nutrition Know it All Students will be working their way up the pyramid of hula-hoops by playing fats, carbs, proteins (rock, paper, scissors). Everyone will start at level one and if they win they will move up to the next level. If they lose they will move down a level. Once a student wins at the last level of the pyramid they will get a piece of “bling” and return to level one and try and work their way up again. Once students get use to the terms we will switch to using our feet to play fats, carbs, proteins. After a few minutes of playing you stop the class and explain that in a gram of carbohydrates there are 4 calories. Now every time they win they must burn off those 4 calories by running to the hand print on the wall and giving it a “High 4” before they are allowed to move to the next level. Every few minutes you will stop them and change the macronutrient. Protein is 4 calories and they will do 4 push-ups. Fat is 9 calories and they will do 9 jumping jacks before moving up. At the end of class whoever has the most bling is the Nutrition Know It All.

Recycle Bin Ballers These SOL’s cover environmental health issues (recycling, pollution) 1.2 p, 1.3 o 2.3 l 3.2 m, 3.3 q 4.1 r, 4.2 s, 4.3 0 5.1 t, 5.2 t, 5.3 o
18
Recycle Bin Ballers Discuss with the students about recycle, reduce, reuse. Ask them how these things impact our school, community, and earth.
19
Recycle Bin Ballers Students will be broken into two different teams. Each team will need to stay on there side of the gym. Each side will have a recycling bin (Ball Bin) at the end line of the basketball court. You will make a goalie box using cones around each bin. Each team is allowed one goalie inside the goalie box to block the trash from being recycled. Only the goalie is allowed in the goalie box. The rest of the students will be throwing different types of balls into the bin on the other side of the gym. The team that has recycled the most trash at the end of the round wins.
