Multipurpose area used for first aid, therapy and rehabilitation, injury prevention, medical procedures (physical exams) and athletic training administration

Size is determined by available space, budget and number/type of teams and athletes

Should be well illuminated Double door at each entrance is preferable Located near locker rooms

Light, heat and water should be independent from the rest of the building Have ample storage areas

Should include all of the following: Treatment Area Electrotherapy Area Hydrotherapy Area Exercise Rehabilitation area

Essential elements to any health care facility OSHA – Occupational Safety and Health Administration Provide guidelines for operation of health care facility

9 Confidentiality HIPAA – The Health and Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (1996) sets national standards for the security of electronic protected health information

10 Confidentiality PSQIA – The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act (2005) establishes a voluntary reporting system to enhance the data available to assess and resolve patient safety and health care quality issues.

11 Sporting Events Coverage
With FULL staff, coverage could potentially be from 5am – 10pm or later Colleges and Universities Without a full staff, the ATC must determine where is the greatest need for coverage

12 Record Keeping Proper record keeping is essential for legal reasons as well as personal knowledge Pre-participation physical, Treatments, injuries, illnesses, medications, rehabilitation process and progress, and medical history

13 SOAP Notes S – Subjective - What the athlete tells you
Ex: O – Objective - What you observe on the athlete A – Assessment - What you gain from your assessment P – Plan - What is your treatment plan

15 Record Keeping Records cannot be released to anyone outside of the following: Coach – only enough to conduct practice Parent – if under 18 Medical Staff working with the athlete

16 Record Keeping The athlete is under 18
The guardian has given written consent The athlete is 18 or over The athlete has given written consent not even parents if the athlete is over 18

17 Return to Play After an injury:
If athlete was not referred to and/or seen by a physician, the athletic trainer can allow return If the athlete was referred to and/or seen by a physician, a written release from the physician must be obtained first

18 Sports Disqualification
ONLY the athlete can permanently disqualify him/herself from sport participation The team physician can only recommend voluntary retirement
