Definition and function
A preposition is a word used to show the relation of a noun or pronoun to some other word in the sentence. Prepositions are used to show where something is located or when something happened.

Followed by a Noun A preposition is usually followed by a noun.
It is never followed by a verb. By “nouns” we include: Proper nouns (dog, Chris) Pronouns (he, she, they) Noun group ( my first job) Gerund (swimming)

Nouns and Prepositions
Prepositions are sometimes so firmly wedded to other words that they practically become one word. This occurs in three categories: nouns, adjectives, and verbs. I have a love for dogs. Chrissy has a Fondness for Beagles. Some people have a hatred towards dogs. I hope for a new puppy. He has an interest in dogs.

He looked afraid of swimming. He was fond of the lake. She is interested in swimming. She was sorry for splashing the people. She was tired of treading water.

Bad Habits Unnecessary Prepositions
We sometimes use prepositions in everyday speech when they are not needed. She met up with the new coach. The book fell off of the desk. Where did they go to? Where is the college at? She wouldn’t let the cat inside of the house.

Prepositional Phrases
A group of words including a preposition and a noun, pronoun or group of words used as a noun. Prepositions can be showed as adverbs, adjectives, and nouns Examples: Julie discovered a pile of books hidden under the staircase. Adverb function He is the actor in the movie. Adjective function Under the stairs is where he hides. Noun function (under the stairs is the subject of the sentence)
