History of Illinois. Illinois was named after the alliance with the Illini. The first explorers in Illinois were Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet.

1 History of Illinois. Illinois was named after the alliance with the Illini. The first explorers in Illinois were Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet. Sieur de LaSalle started the commerce.

2 George Roger Clark Was a Revolutionary War hero who captured Fort Kaskaskia that used to belong to the British on the 4th of July He ended the control of England in Illinois.

3 The Northeastern Ordinance of 1787
It established a government in the territory of Illinois. Illinois was finally a State December 3rd, The first Governor was Shadrach Bond.

4 First Explorers The first Europeans who explored Illinois were Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet. Sieur de LaSalle was the first one to start trading with furs, including Creve Coeur fort.

5 Illinois – First Years The Northeastern ordinance of 1787 ordered for a government to be established in the territory of Illinois. The capital of the territory was Kaskaskia. A treaty of 1804 ordered most Native Americans to the West of the Mississippi river. After the War of 1812 few Native Americans remained in Illinois.

6 Illinois – As a State Illinois was established as a state December 3rd, 1818. Its Constitution was written in Kaskaskia. The first Governor was Shadrach Bond

7 Illinois- Capitals Illinois has had 3 capitals: - Kaskaskia 1818
- Vandalia 1820 - Springfield. 1837

8 Blackhawk War After the 1812 War, few Native Americans remained in Illinois. The very few who remained where forced to move to the west of the Mississippi river. Blackhawk was the leader of these two tribes: The Winnebago and the Potawatomi. More than 8000 Americans were soldiers in the war, including Abraham Lincoln to fight against 1000 Native Americans.

9 Blackhawk War 600 people were killed 500 of them were Native Americans
Blackhawk was captured Their followers were forced to give up their land. Blackhawk and their people were sent to a reserve in Iowa. All the Native Americans were forced to move to the west of the Mississippi river.

Illinois shares a border with 5 states: (WIMKI) Winsconsin Iowa Missouri Kentucky Indiana

11 Illinois –Water borders
Lake Michigan Mississippi River Wabash River Ohio River Illinois River is the main river and passes through the center of the state.

12 Illinois - Government Illinois became a state December 3rd, 1818.
Shadrach Bond was the first Governor. The 1787 Ordinance asked that the government established Illinois as a territory.

13 Executive Branch 6 Offices that are elected every 4 years: Governor
Vicegovernor General Attorney Secretary of State Comptroller Treasurer

14 Requirements (Executive Branch)
Be a US citizen Be at least 25 years old Be an Illinois resident for at least 3 consecutive years prior to the election

15 Governor- Duties Execute laws Can fire incompetent officials
Can reorganize executive offices that are his direct responsibility. Can pardon people. Must report at the beginning and end of each Annual General Assembly.

16 Legislative Branch The process of creating new laws takes place in the General Assembly. There are two houses at the General Assembly: House of Representatives (with 118 members) The Senate (with 59 members) Elected every 2 years

17 Legislative Branch -Requirements
Be a US citizen Be at least 21 years of age Reside in the district you represent for at least 2 years prior to the elections.

18 General Assembly - Duties
Ordain, amend, approve or deny laws. Question the proposed legislation. May accuse and judge state executives and judiciary officials (only in the House of Representatives)

19 Judiciary Branch 3 Courts: Supreme Court (appeal and dead row cases)
Appeal Court (appeal cases from the circuit court) Circuit Court (Cases assigned by the justice judge in each court).

20 Requirements Be a citizen Be a law judge
Reside in the unit you are being elected Elected in the office: Supreme y Appeal (10 years) Circuit (6 years) Associate (4 years), named.

21 The Constitution and the rights
A written plan of government in the Constitution. The individual rights of Illinois Citizens are warranted in the Constitution with in the Bill of Rights.
