1 Poetry Notes Types of Poems
Lyric Definition: poetry that expresses the poet’s thoughts and feelings. It does not tell a story, but creates a mood through vivid pictures, descriptive words, and the musical quality of the lines. Historically, these poems were sung and accompanied by a lyre (harp). The majority of poems and songs fall into this category.

Free Verse Definition: poetry not written in a regular, rhythmic pattern. In free verse, the poet can write lines at any length or with irregular stresses Free verse does not rhyme! Free verse often attempts to catch speech patterns. To read and understand free verse poetry, you have to carefully follow punctuation.

Dramatic Poetry Definition: Poetry where the lines of a poem are spoken by the characters, like in a play or script The most famous poet of this style was William Shakespeare Sonnets: 14 line poems with a set rhyme and rhythm scheme, 10 syllables/ line, are a good example of dramatic poetry

Narrative Definition: A short story written in poetic format. Narrative poetry has rhyme and rhythm It is written in stanzas It frequently has dialogue Like a story, narrative poetry has setting, characters, plot and theme
