Cells
2
Section 1 Organization of Life
3
The smallest unit of living matter
Cells The smallest unit of living matter All living organisms consist of one or more cells All cells need to exchange nutrients and waste with their environment
4
Tissue A group of cells that work together to perform a specific job in the body.
5
F Fat Tissue Muscle Tissue
6
Two or more tissues working together to perform a specific job
Organ Two or more tissues working together to perform a specific job
9
Organs working together in groups to perform particular jobs
Organ Systems Organs working together in groups to perform particular jobs
11
Anything that can live on its own. Made of one or more cells.
Organism Anything that can live on its own. Made of one or more cells.
12
Unicellular Organisms
Single cell living on its own
13
All Cells have the following:
Cell Membrane: Barrier between the inside or the cell and its environment. Hereditary Material: DNA, material passed on when a new cell forms (not all cells have a nucleus)
14
Cytoplasm: cellular fluid surrounding a cell’s organelles
Organelles: Structures in the cell that allow it to live, grow, and reproduce Cytoplasm: cellular fluid surrounding a cell’s organelles *Show bacteria, plant and animal cell overheads or p. 23 and p. 14
15
Multicellular Organisms
An organism with many cells
16
Section 2 The Discovery of Cells
17
The Cell Theory All organisms made of one or more cells
The cell is the basic unit of life in all living things All cells come from existing cells
18
Small Size If a cell gets too large it divides Are elephant cells larger than yours???
19
Multicellular Cells are Specialized to perform a certain job
