Puppet at China Shadow puppetry originated during the Han Dynasty when one of the concubines of Emperor Wu of Han died from an illness. The emperor was devastated, and he summoned his court officers to bring his beloved back to life. The officers made a shape of the concubine using donkey leather. Her joints were animated using 11 separate pieces of the leather, and adorned with painted clothes. Using an oil lamp they made her shadow move, bringing her back to life. Shadow theatre became quite popular as early as the Song Dynasty when holidays were marked by the presentation of many shadow plays.

Puppet at China One mouth tells stories of thousands of years; a pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. This is how the shadow puppeteer works. Nicknamed the business of the five, a shadow puppet troupe is made up of five people. One operates the puppets, one plays a horn, a suo-na horn, and a yu-kin, one plays banhu fiddle, one is in charge of percussion instruments, and one sings. This singer assumes all the roles in the puppet show, which of course is very difficult. That is not all; the singer also plays several of the over 20 kinds of musical instruments in a puppet show. These ancient musical instruments enhance this ancient folk art.

Puppet at India Kathputli is a string puppet theatre, native to Rajasthan, India, and is the most popular form of Indian puppetry.Being a string marionette, it is controlled by a single string that passes from the top of the puppet over the puppeteers.

Puppet at India Some scholars believe Kathputli art tradition is more than thousands years old.] One finds its reference in Rajasthani folk tales, ballads and sometimes even in folk songs. The tribes of Rajasthan have been performing this art from the ancient times and it has become an eternal part of Rajasthani culture and tradition. No village fair, no religious festival and no social gathering in Rajasthan can be complete without the Kathputlis. It is believed that somewhere 1500 years ago, tribal Rajasthani Bhat community started the use of Kathputli as string marionette art and it is in their love for tradition that art of Kathputli survived the test of time. Tradition of Kathputli is based on folk tales and stories. Scholars believe that folk tales convey the lifestyle of ancient Rajasthani tribal people and Kathputli art might have originated from present day Nagaur and surrounding areas. Rajasthani Kings and nobles were patrons of Art and Craft and they encouraged the craftsmen in activities ranging from wood and marble carving to weaving, pottery and painting. Over the last 500 years, Kathputli was a system of patronage supported by kings and well-off families.

Wayang kulit Shadow-puppet theatre of Indonesia. Wayang, commonly translated as puppet, is the traditional theatre of Java and Bali in which a dalang (puppet master) uses puppets, masks, or people to narrate a story to the percussive music of a gamelan orchestra. Wayang kulit (literally, ‘hide puppet’) uses figures made of water buffalo skin. The single puppeteer-narrator sits behind a white screen, using a lamp to create the shadows. The puppets are displayed on a horizontal banana tree board which sits atop wooden legs, where they lie ready for use. A set includes about 100 puppets on Bali and over 300 puppets on Java, and as many as 50 figures can be used in a single performance. Delicate manipulation, complex formulas in archaic language, virtuoso singing, dexterous vocal technique, intricate plot patterns, and bawdy humour are combined in a remarkable performance by the dalang, who improvises inside a pattern of formulaic songs and narratives. His presentations, which are hired by a family or village for a rite of passage celebration, may last up to eight hours. Wayang kulit relies on stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana, while wayang gedog dramatizes the escapades of the amorous east Javanese Prince Panji. Local histories and contemporary tales may also be performed.
15
Wayang golek Puppet theatre of Sunda and Java in Indonesia. A single dalang or puppet master manipulates three-dimensional rod puppets to tell stories from the Mahabharata and Ramayana in Sundanese-speaking areas. Accompanied by a gamelan orchestra and one singer, performances last from nine in the evening through the night. Based on wayang cepak, which treats historical episodes or stories of Amir Hamzah, the uncle of Muhammad, wayang golek originated in the eighteenth century as puppet masters from the north coast of Java migrated into the highlands. It is now seen at weddings, circumcisions, or other life-cycle ceremonies, presented on a temporary stage outside the home of the host family. Ritual performances continue, but most spectators now are seeking entertainment; indeed the biting political critique of performers sometimes evokes government censorship. Thousands of spectators gather to enjoy the lifelike manipulation and raucous humour of top dalang such as Asep Sunander Sunarya, Ade Sunarya, and Dede Amung Sutarya. Traditionally a hereditary art, since the 1970s it has been taught at SMKI, the Indonesian High School of Performing Arts in Bandung. The older wayang cepak, itself derived from the shadow theatre (wayang kulit), continues to be presented in some areas of north, central, and east Java.

Different types of puppets are used in traditional puppetry. The differences exist not only in names, but also in form, structure, manipulation and presentation techniques. The different traditional forms are glove, rod, string, and shadow puppets. The local name given to puppetry varies from state to state within India.
19
Glove Glove The glove puppet, also known as hand puppets is a small figure having head and arms with a long skirt as part of its costume. The puppeteer wears the puppet like a glove and fits the index finger into the hollow head of the puppet. The middle finger and the thumb fit into the two hollow hands of the puppet. One puppeteer can manipulate two puppets at a time. Glove puppet shows are prevalent in the states of Kerala (Pava-kathakali), Orissa (Sakhi Kundhei- nacha) and West Bengal (Bener Putul nach).
20
Rod Rod The rod puppets, often larger than glove puppets are supported and manipulated by rods of various types and sizes. In rod puppets the action of the rods are concealed in many ways. The main holding rod that supports the puppet may be hidden by a robe or costume of the puppet. The action rods are usually connected to the hands of the puppet and manipulated by the puppeteer to show action. Rod puppet shows are prevalent in the states of Assam (Putula nach), Orissa (Kathi- Kundhei-nach) and West Bengal (Danger Putul nach).
21
Shadow Shadow Shadow puppets are flat puppets that are operated against the rear of a tightly stretched white cloth screen with a light behind it so that the audience looks at the shadow of the puppet on the screen. Traditional shadow puppets are two-dimensional and are made of animal skin. The puppet shapes or cutouts are perforated and split bamboo or cane sticks are attached vertically to the puppet for handling and manipulation. The puppets are pressed against the screen and manipulated for the performance. The shadow puppet performance is known as shadow (Leather) play or shadow theatre. The Shadow puppet theatre is practiced in the states of Andhra Pradesh (Tholu Bommalata), Karnataka (Togalu Gombeyata), Kerala (Tolpavakoothu), Maharashtra (chamadyache Bahulya), Orissa, and Tamil Nadu (Tolpavaikoothu).
22
String String The string puppet also known as marionettes has jointed body and limbs that allow movement. String puppets are made of wood, or wire, or cloth stuffed with cotton, rags or saw dust. The puppet is suspended from a hand held control strings that are attached to different parts of the puppet's body. The puppet is manipulated by operating the control as well as by loosening or pulling the relevant string(s). Some of the traditional string puppets are very heavy. For the convenience of manipulation and support, two rods are attached to the hands of the puppets. This method is used only in the states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Traditional string puppet shows are prevalent in the states of Andhra Pradesh (Koyya Bommalata), Assam (Putala Nach), Karnataka (Sutrada Gombeyata), Maharashtra (Kalasutri Bahulya), Rajasthan (Kathputli), Orissa (Gopalila), Tamil Nadu (Bommalatam) and West Bengal (Tarer or Sutor Putul).
