Have an individual status with each group member throughout project either in person or on-line
Have students submit their portion of the project at various time throughout the project to ensure they are making any progress (teaches as well as tracks)

It’s important to involve students engaged in long-term, high-stakes group projects in the evaluation process. Students need to evaluate their peers’ and their own contributions to the project and the process. To provide them with some of the data they will need to make and support their evaluation, encourage them to maintain logs of individuals’ contributions to the group, to keep minutes of group meetings in which they record the contributions of individual members, and/or to keep group process journals in which they reflect on the contributions of various members of the group.
