The Dee-Mack Wing-T Fullback Run Game
How We Produced 9,000 Yards and 100 touchdowns in 6 Years on 3 Plays
2
Trap Lead (Outside Belly) Belly (Down)
3
Brandon Evans 4,078 yards 48 TDs Jared Reese 4,899 yards 60 TDs
4
Prototype: Best player Must be one of the fastest players
5
Formations/Alignments
90% Double Tight; 10% Unbalanced Double Tight forces defenses to balance up Two tight ends will bring defensive backs closer to the line of scrimmage, but we are okay with our opponent’s worst tacklers having to tackle our best player(s) 20+ times per game Unbalanced makes us more predictable, but replaces a smaller tight end with a bigger tackle and may force defenders out of their comfort zone Fullback at five yards in a two-point stance for better vision (especially for the trap)
6
Game Planning Progression
Run at the bubbles vs. gap-oriented defenses Run opposite defensive slants vs. head-up defenses Which gap defender is the penetrator?
7
B gap = 43 Lead A gap = 42 Trap D gap = 46 Belly
8
Audibles To flip the play to the other side:
42 Trap (to the right) is the call, but the 3-tech. is now lined up on the left: Example “Orange” (“O” for opposite) *Pass plays serve as dummy calls
9
Audibles To run a different play to the same side:
42 Trap (to the right) is the call, but the 3-tech. is now lined up on the left, so we will run 44 Lead (still to the right): Example “84” (any number that ends in “4”; we have no other play other than 44 Lead that ends in 4) *Pass plays serve as dummy calls
10
Nose slants left: run Trap right (vice versa)
Ends slant in: run Lead outside of them Ends slant out: run Trap inside of them
12
Key breaker: Away from motion
13
Key breaker: False pull (influence) against linebackers that key guards
14
Odds and Ends The Trap is a great 3rd and long play! Take advantage of an upfield push rush and linebackers dropping early into pass coverage. (It will help set up your pass play on the next 3rd and long.) You can/should run the Trap wide to take advantage of upfield C-gap defensive ends. You can run Trap against double-A gap. Don’t forget to practice trapping a blitzing linebacker.
15
From Good to Great Practice daily against great defensive technique, i.e., squeeze and spill technique We spend our individual time practicing against bodies; not chutes and sleds
21
Odds and Ends The success of this play is largely dependent on the quality of the lead blocker! Good counter play to motion. Practice “worst case” scenarios: i.e., we would like to run the Lead play to a 1-technique, but are prepared to run it against a 3-technique (to stay consistent with his rules, the lead blocking back will have to block a defensive linemen).
