The 1970’s By: Noah Applegate

Introduction This is my 8th grade exit project. This project is about the 1970’s. most of the events in this decade are tragic yet there are a few that are exciting. Enjoy.

1970- Kent state massacre May 4th, 1970,
Students rallied to protest the Vietnam war. 13 Students were shot during the event. 4 of the 13 were killed. The deceased are: Jeffery Miller, William Schroeder, Allison Krause, and Sandra Scheuer.

Kent state Cont. The Guards said they shot at specific targets.
One student was left permanently paralyzed. Guards claimed to shoot only because the rest were shooting. Guards shot because the protesters were advancing toward them.

1942-Attica prison riot In 1941 the inmates at the Attica prison revolted. Attica was a maximum security prison in New York. 100% of the guards were white and 54% of the inmates were black All the guards were Racist/prejudice

Attica Riots Cont. The prisoners took over the courtyard and made a community amongst themselves that was free of a racial tension between Whites and Blacks and Hispanics. 40 guards were taken hostage during the riots. Riots ended when the military went in there and killed 29 prisoners and 10 hostages

1972- Watergate scandal The Watergate hotel was the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee. Video cameras were found recording the national committee 5 men were arrested for placing the recordings in the hotel They found that the men had ties to Nixon

1973- Spiro Agnew resigns In 1968 Spiro agnew became the vice president. In he became a “household word” In 1972 Nixon and Agnew won the election in a landslide. Nixon had chosen Spiro because he thought that he would still have all the fame and popularity Was told to resign or he would be impeached

Spiro Agnew Cont. Was told to resign because of a criminal investigation during his term as a governor. Went to Los Angeles to try to gather support so he could stay in office. Spiro failed in Los Angeles He resigned on Oct. 10th 1973

1974- Nixon resigns President Richard M. Nixon was involved in the Watergate scandal Nixon resigned so that he could avoid impeachment Nixon was immediately replaced by VP Gerald R. Ford. Nixon was the only president in history to resign

1975- Vietcong take over South Vietnam
America had gone into Vietnam to stop the spread of communism North Vietnam was communist while South Vietnam was not. America believed that if North Vietnam won the war communists would take over the world America had used Napalm on the Vietnamese to take out specific areas at a time.

Vietnam Cont. Many people in America had been protesting the war.
Eventually America had to pull its troops out of Vietnam Without America to protect them, the South Vietnamese were overrun and taken by the Viet-Cong

1976- Probe lands on mars On July 20th 1976 the first human spacecraft landed on mars The Russians had tried to launch a successful probe to mars but the probe was destroyed in the atmosphere. The Viking project consisted of two probes Viking1 and Viking 2. Both of the probes sent orbiters into the air that were later shut off from mission control

1977- Star wars In 1977 the first of one of the largest movie series in American history was released. Star wars was written by George Lucas and was a huge hit

Star wars Star wars is about a young man named Luke Skywalker, the movie follows his adventures through space and his meeting with the feared “Darth Vader”

1978- Jonestown massacre Jim Jones was a very charismatic religious leader of the Peoples Temple The Peoples Temple was a church for everyone there was no discrimination of race or gender Jones wanted to get away so he bought some land in British Guyana and convinced 900 people to join him

Jim Jones cont. U.S congressman Leo Ryan had heard about this community and went to check it out When congressman Ryan got there he was surprised to see armed guards surrounding the perimeter Some people had asked Ryan to get them out of Jonestown because it was hot and not the paradise they were promised. Ryan took the ones who wanted to leave and left the others.

Afraid that they might tell the U.S that Jonestown should be shut down, Jones had a group of people to keep Ryan in Guyana The congressman was boarding his plane when he heard shots coming from the people that Jones sent, when word came back that

Ryan was dead Jones lined up his people in one last drink… Cyanide laced flavor-aid. After drinking the poison drink people died in 3-5 minutes.

1979-Greensboro Massacre The 1979 Greensboro massacre started as a march to protest against the KKK Many people rallied together to march saying no more KKK

Greensboro massacre cont.
5 people were killed by Klan members who were found and charged with first degree murder. The majority of the five dead were white supporters of anti-racism.
