Terms to Know Federalism = sharing of power between local government and federal (central) government. Democracy = a country who’s government is elected of, by and for the people Protestant Work Ethic = Taught in Protestant religions; working hard and living clean are key to improving life

More kings forced to share power Parliaments (Congress) rose up first in Protestant countries, led to first democracies

#1 “Rise in literacy” (due to printing press) Helps build: More educated societies, people vote #2 “Rise in individualism” Helps build: Respect for individual people #3“Protestants love of country” Helps build: Nationalism (pride in one’s country)

Helps build: Goal of social mobility, equality #5 “Some smart peasants moved into merchant class” Helps build: Capitalism (higher social classes due to your merit) #6 “Protestant belief in hard work” Helps build: work ethic

Calvinists, unlike Catholics, elected their leaders to high church positions Our Founding Fathers (Washington, Jefferson, etc.) felt Calvin was right about elections Americans should embrace Protestant work ethic.
