1
Michigan’s New Energy Sources
By: Kenzie and Jake
2
What is happening now These are the fossil fuels being killed and burned off to make energy and pollution. Soon, this will all disappear, and not come back for a long time. Possibly 1 million years.
3
Michigan’s New Sources
-Hydro Power -Wind Power -Biomass -Coal
4
Michigan should invest in this source because it is one of our cheapest options, because we have most of the great lakes in the state. Hydro: It is a good source because 2/3 of Michigan property is the great lakes Pros: It is an advantage because of the great lakes It creates no greenhouse gasses or air pollution Cons: -Dam Design placement can change courses for rivers -Negative impact on rivers and ecology can effect fish reproduction
5
Michigan should invest in this source because we are one of the Midwest states, who gets all four seasons in a year. Turbines are a cheap and helpful resource in this case, and a few in each area could definitely keep energy going, as long as the wind keeps going. Wind: Michigan is one of the northern and cooler states with a lot of wind up north Pros: -In expensive to operate and maintain -Produces water pollution or air pollution Cons: May kill birds or bats if placed in migration path Production is intermediate depending on the wind
6
Michigan should invest in this source because Up-North, Michigan citizens own a lot of farmland. They grow crops like corn, timber (trees), and they raise livestock. With everything extra, and a lot of help from other Michiganders, we can have a lot of biomass energy to last a long time. Biomass: A lot of food goes to waste every year creating a good composing source for Michigan Pros: -Can reduce landfill space -Does not create any greenhouse gasses Cons: -Could release air pollutants
7
Coal: It is non-renewable, but is one of our cheapest source choices
Though Michigan has already agreed to invest in this source, it is a cheap source that the U.S. has a big supply of coal. Coal: It is non-renewable, but is one of our cheapest source choices Pros: -Good supply in the U.S. and is cheap -Can be used to generate a lot of electricity Cons: -Mining can cause erosion, and large water sheds -Combustion produces air pollutants such as; sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxide, and air toxins
