You have 5 minutes to write your answer down in your notebook.
Bell Ringer You have 5 minutes to write your answer down in your notebook. Where does energy for life processes come from?
2
3.2 Notes Energy Flow
3
Source: Sunlight is the main energy source for life on earth
Other sources: - energy stored in inorganic chemical compounds
4
Energy from the Sun Photosynthesis
Autotrophs use light energy to power chemical reactions Convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and carbohydrates (sugars & starches)
5
Photosynthesis adds oxygen, removes carbon dioxide
6
Autotrophs vs Heterotrophs:
Can produce own food (producers) Capture energy from sunlight or chemicals to produce food Example: Plants, some algae Heterotrophs- Cannot produce own food (consumers) Get energy and food supply from other organisms Example: Animals, fungi Herbivores, carnivores, omnivores, detritivores, decomposers
7
Energy Flow Flows through an ecosystem in one direction Food Chain
Sun --> autotrophs --> to various heterotrophs Food Chain series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
9
3.2 Review Fill out Heterotrophs table
10
Heterotrophs (consumers)
Herbivores Eat plants Deer, cows Carnivores Eat meat Wolves, dogs Omnivores Both plants and animals Humans, bears Detritivores Plant & animal dead remains Mites, earthworms Decomposers Breaks down organic matter Bacteria, fungi
