1 Chapter 20.1 Advances in Technology and Communication.

2 Electricity Between Michael Farday discovered that electricity could produce magnetism with the help of Andre Ampere. He then wanted to see if magnetism could produce electricity. Others then used Michaels work to create the dynamo which was an electric generator which converted mechanical power into electricity. Then in 1879 Thomas Edison used electricity to make a bulb glow for 2 days. He then was able to develop a successful powerhouse and transmission system in New York City, London, and a variety of other places in 1882. Due to the rapid growth of the electrical industry the construction of dams with dynamo engines inside them increased in order to produce large amounts of power.

3 Communication In 1876 Alexander Graham Bell sent the first human voice over a long distance by means of an electrical circuit. James Clerk Maxwell made a mathematical study of electricity and magnetism in 1873 that revealed invisible electromagnetic waves which travel through space at the speed of light. He proved they existed by transmitting them , receiving them , and recording the length and speed of the waves. They later became know as radio waves. Then in 1895 Guglielmo Marconi invented the wireless telegraph which sent and received radio waves wirelessly. He then sent the first wireless message across the Atlantic ocean in 1901

4 The Internal Combustion Engine
The electric motor although useful it had a limiting factor, it has to be connected to a power supply so it means its impractical as a means of moving vehicles. In the late 1800s several inventors worked on engines that used a portable fuel supply of oil or gasoline to propel vehicles. It is called the internal combustion engine as the combustion of the fuel takes place inside a closed cylinder. In 1893 Charles and Frank Duryea built the first successful gasoline driven automobile and then 15 years later Henry ford produced his first commercial successful automobile, the Model T. Then in 1903 Wilbur and Orville Wright became the first people to fly a powered airplane in sustained and controlled flight.

5 Objectives 1.Q:Explain how the development of new sources of power led to technological advances. A:New power sources opened up the possibility for technological exploration and discovery, especially with electricity. 2.Q:Describe inventions from the late 1800s that improved communications. A:The discovery of electromagnetic waves and the invention of the wireless telegraph introduced new ways to communicate over long distances. 3.Q:Explain the importance of the internal combustion engine. A:The internal combustion engine had the best power to weight ratio at its time of invention and thus made it easier to invent airplanes. It also changed how the building of cities and business was done and the quality of personal transportation.
