3 Detailed Outline* The Foundation of the Church at Corinth 3:10-11
The Superstructure of the Church at Corinth 3:12-17 The Quality of each Man’s work will be Judged 3:12-15 The Local Church is the Temple of God 3:16-17 Worker Must be Assessed by God’s Standards, not Man’s The Problem of Self-deception 3:18 The Problem of Human Wisdom 3:19-20 The Application of this Truth 3:21-23 * adapted from McCalley

4 16  Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? 17  If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. 18  Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. 19  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, "He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS"; 20  and again, "THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS." 21  So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you, 22  whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23  and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.

5 How is temple used in this verse?
16  Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? The pronoun you occurs 3 times and is plural each time. Therefore v16 would read: Do you (plural) not know that you (plural) are a temple (singular) of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you (plural)? temple - naos - a shrine or sanctuary: used of a physical structure, also metaphorically of Christ’s body, of the local church, and each individual believer see Acts 17:24, John 2:19, 2 Cor. 6:16, 1 Cor. 6:19 How is temple used in this verse?

6 How were they (Corinthians) destroying that temple?
17  If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. destroys - , phtheirō - signifies "to destroy by means of corrupting," and so "bringing into a worse state;" Vine see 1 Cor 15:33 How were they (Corinthians) destroying that temple? They were destroying it by their dissension - see I Cor. 1: – McCalley How will God destroy the Corinthians?

7 17  If any man destroys the temple of God, God will destroy him, for the temple of God is holy, and that is what you are. In this context we see that the body of believers in Corinth were God’s temple and therefore holy (or set apart). This is why what the Corinthians were doing was so serious. An Individual believer is also referred to as a temple 1 Cor. 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?

8 18 Let no man deceive himself
18  Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. Let no man deceive himself deceive - exapataō - to deceive completely, beguile, seduce, meaning to lead out of the right way into error. see Rom 7:11, 2 Cor. 11:3 Let no one continue to be deceiving himself (Wuest) or Stop continuing to deceive oneself (present, imperative) deception is the creation of a belief that is contrary to fact All men are deceived to the extent that their mind is devoid of the word of God. - McCalley

9 18 Let no man deceive himself
18  Let no man deceive himself. If any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, he must become foolish, so that he may become wise. If (as is the case) any man among you thinks that he is wise in this age, note: this is “among you” the Corinthians in this age (or world system) also see 1 Cor. 8:2, Gal 6:3 he must become foolish (by the world’s standard), so that he may become wise. This world does not embrace God’s wisdom and views; those as fools who do. The believer must be willing to bear this onus if he is to be freed by the truth - McCalley

10 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God
19  For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God. For it is written, "He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS"; For the wisdom of this world is foolishness before God for the wisdom of this world system is foolishness as God looks at it (Wuest) - see 1 Cor. 1:20 God is not passive but active concerning false wisdom! He is THE ONE WHO CATCHES THE WISE IN THEIR CRAFTINESS (false wisdom) a quotation from Job 5:13 "He captures the wise by their own shrewdness, And the advice of the cunning is quickly thwarted.”

11 useless - void of result – see Titus 3:9, 1 Pet 1:18
20  and again, "THE LORD KNOWS THE REASONINGS of the wise, THAT THEY ARE USELESS." THE LORD KNOWS (ginōskō) THE REASONINGS of the wise (human wisdom) reasonings - dialogismos - a thought, reasoning, inward questioning or disputing - see Rom 1:21, Phil 2:14 THAT THEY (reasonings of the wise) ARE USELESS useless - void of result – see Titus 3:9, 1 Pet 1:18 This is a quote from Psalm 94:11The LORD knows the thoughts of man, That they are a mere breath.

12 21 So then let no one boast in men. For all things belong to you,
So then (or in conclusion) let no one boast in men stop continuing to boasting in men (present, imperative) see 1 Cor. 4:6, Gal 6:13-14 For all things belong to you lit: for all things are yours are- eimi – status quo verb What does Scripture say about the “all things” of saved? Romans 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him over for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things? also see Eph. 1:3 The next verses will tell us about what we have

13 for all things are yours, whether Paul (teaching)
23b For all things belong to you, 22  whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, 23  and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God. for all things are yours, whether Paul (teaching) or Apollos (teaching) or Cephas (teaching) or the existing order of material things (world) or life or death or present things or things about to come, all belong to you, and you belong to Christ and Christ belongs to God We should glory in our spiritual possessions --- all things are ours in Christ, and here is where our delight should be McCalley
