1 What we will do What we will learn 10N 15 Mahuru 2017
Quick quiz and preliminaries How to start well Revisit what ionic compounds are and why they are formed PLUS Do some examples in class INCLUDING complex ions What ionic compounds are, why they are formed and how to tackle some examples Write down the chemical formulae and names of the three main acids used in school labs What they are and how to write them (both ways) Find out the results for an acid & a metal reacted How to predict the outcome Examine the pH scale A new word with the start a lower case letter and the second one being a capital

2 10N – Seating Plan Front of lab - Whiteboard

3 HW item Skills practiced Pages 1 – 25 of Motion booklet
Due Pd 2, Thursday 27 July 2017 Movement, forces and acceleration Pages of Motion/Light booklet Due Pd 2, Thurs 7 Sept 2017 (Sorry Zach) How light behaves. End of Topic Test: Motion & Light Due Pd 5, Fri 25th of Aug 2017 How well we learned the material in the unit on Motion and Light

5 An atom has the same number of protons and electrons.
If an atom has gained or lost an electron or some electrons THEN IT IS NO LONGER CALLED AN ATOM. It is called an ION.

10 Helium, Neon and Arg0n do not lose or gain electrons.
Write a sentence explaining why.

11 New Buzzwords (Jargon)
In the periodic table, we can look at elements that are in the same vertical column, e.g. Be, Mg, Ca. These are called a GROUP. In the periodic table, we can look at elements that are in the same horizontal row, e.g. Na, Mg, Al, Si, P, S, Cl, Ar, Ca. These are called a PERIOD. Elements in the same PERIOD have the same number of layers (shells) of electrons but different numbers in the outside layer. Elements in the same GROUP have the same number of electrons in the outside layer but different number of layers (shells). Elements in the same group tend to react similarly because the reactions are caused by the electrons in the outside layer.

12 Tough Group Task Write a paragraph discussing the similarities and differences between atoms of Hydrogen, Lithium, Sodium and Potassium in terms of their: Position on the periodic table Their state at room temperature and atmospheric pressure Electron arrangements Ions that they form.
