Composing Gilbert and Rice “Hokie Power” Team

2 Do-Now Please read the three prompts
Your task is to craft an 8th grade hook for each prompt= you will create 3 hooks (1 for each prompt) Make sure you use at least 2 hook techniques for each hook—see handout You have 10 minutes (if you have your notes, you may use them) Be ready to share out loud at the end of 10 minutes

3 Hook Activity Find a partner (make a smart decision about who you choose to work with, please.) You will share your hooks with your partner. Choose the strongest hook between the 6 hooks the two of you wrote (3 per person, remember?) you have 2 minutes You will publish the following information on the sticky note which will be placed on the board: The hook (author’s name if you choose) The prompt # Techniques used

4 Have you ever been slapped in the face, looked around and saw how many kids saw it happen, and no one say anything to you? Bullying is something that middle-schoolers encounter on most days of their lives. Being an upstander in a urban middle school is one of the hardest and riskiest things a person could do. If I were to try to convince a friend to become an upstander, I would encourage them to tell an adult, have them pretend that it was their sibling being bullied, and risk being a person who stands up for what is right with the known consequence of taunting and ridicule.

5 Apply to your writing Craft a hook for your introduction paragraph for the purple bullying prompt that you answered on Monday morning. You have 5 minutes Make it strong, because you will be integrating this into a final introduction paragraph at the end of the class Publish on the purple strip

6 Introduce your topic In order for the reader to understand what you are writing about, you must introduce the topic You can’t hook them and then just present them with your thesis statement—you must give them a little information about yourself or the prompt or both
