1 MicroTCA Common Platform For CMS Working Group
Status Report E. Hazen - Boston University for the CMS Collaboration E. Hazen -- CMS Week

2 E. Hazen -- CMS Week

3 uTCA Common Platform WG (convened by me at Magnus' request)
Included in scope of this WG Backplane connectivity (port connections) Protocols on common ports (TTC / TTS / DAQ) Crate and MCH specification Power supplies Guidelines for AMC designers Not in scope (but negotiable) Implementation of MMC, GbE on AMCs and MCH E. Hazen -- CMS Week

4 DRAFT Draft document Under review by WG 2010-12-04
E. Hazen -- CMS Week

5 Requirements Summary E. Hazen -- CMS Week

6 Review: uTCA Ports Use for CMS
DRAFT E. Hazen -- CMS Week

7 DRAFT Review: Fabrics A, B Use
Port 0 is GbE sourced from commercial MCH1 Port 1 – Compatible with Xilinx GTP (<= Gb/s) DAQ data from AMC to MCH2 May be used also for fixed-latency controls (TTC) May be used also for buffer status (TTS) May be used also for auxiliary data (selective readout) Port 3 – “Low speed” serial LVDS ( Mb/s) Fixed-latency controls (TTC) Buffer status (TTS) Auxiliary data (selective readout) DRAFT E. Hazen -- CMS Week

8 Review: Fabrics D and up
Use not mandated by this WG Mainly for trigger users Two options for interconnection Star connection to tongue 3, 4 of MCH slots Interconnect passively or with crosspoint switch at MCH Fixed connections on backplane Or, a combination: Ports 4-7 interconnected on backplane Ports 8-12 routed to crosspoint switch on MCH2 E. Hazen -- CMS Week

9 MicroTCA Crate Layout Option 1 (preferred) Option 2
12 full-height AMCs non-redundant power single-width MCH i.e. Vadatech VT892 Still under discussion.... Recommend AMC be kept to “mid-height” profile if possible Option 2 12 mid-height AMCs redundant power double-width MCH Rear transition modules evolving xTCA “physics profile” E. Hazen -- CMS Week

10 CMS-MCH Preliminary Design (aka HCAL DTC version 2)
Base configuration has only tongues 1, 2 Base board - “AMC13” with optics and HS links Clocks board - distributes LHC clock and controls Mezzanine connector for T3 with IPMI New custom T1 base board MMC functions (as AMC-13) TTC optical rx 4x SFP Cross-over GbE from MCH1 for controls and local DAQ Optional T3 board Optional (not in std CMS-MCH) Crosspoint switch for trigger applications Clocks board Clock / controls fanout T4 T3 T2 T1 E. Hazen -- CMS Week

11 CMS-MCH Preliminary Design
Propose 4 SFP on front panel TTC / TTS ( Mb/s) DAQ to S-Link adapter / DAQ upgrade GbE option if backplane not available Spare E. Hazen -- CMS Week

12 Action Items Draft document (now out for review by WG)
Crate Specification (~done by Greg Iles) Have quote from Vadatech; working on other vendors Confirm that commercial MCH have req'd features Vadatech supports AMC13 NAT supports “update channel” Ethernet Neither support both currently :( Research use of eSATA, PCIe Confirm these are compatible with our configuration E. Hazen -- CMS Week

13 Action Items (continued)
Acquire VT892 crate for testing CERN colleagues are now buying ~6 crates HCAL is waiting for M&S funding Proceed with design of DTC-2 / CMS-MCH Milestone: tested/installed during “2012” shutdown Funding ? E. Hazen -- CMS Week

14 A brief word on DAQ & CREMA
CREMA Introduced in June... no meetings so far Scope is evolving Magnus has asked me to participate in any future meetings as MicroTCA coordinator... Had several discussions with DAQ hardware folks about future Still no firm plans, but I am in the loop E. Hazen -- CMS Week
