2 Main idea- With progress towards equality moving slowly, activists and political leaders worked to end segregation Activist groups worked to end racial discrimination Federal government also tried to combat racial inequality Racist whites slowed the efforts of desegregation

3 During and after world war 2 many activist leaders with different ideas and methods worked to end racial discrimination Martin Luther King Jr. was a main leader of the civil rights movement. He used nonviolent tactics such as protest. He gave the "I have a dream" speech in 1963 during the march on Washington. Phillip Randolph was the head of the March. This was the largest political rally ever seen in the US. Malcolm X was a major leader in the civil rights movement. His strategy was more focused towards violence likely because of the violence he faced as a child. He urged his followers to believe in the philosophy "black power".

5 Federal government joined the fight to end racial segregation by passing various laws in favor of racial equality 24th amendment (1964) was the right for all citizens to vote in any primary or other election Brown vs. board of education (1954) was a court case where the Supreme Court declared that state laws separating blacks in schools was unconstitutional Civil rights act of 1964 outlawed discrimination based on race, color, sex, religion, or national origin

7 Racist whites slowed the efforts of desegregation causing political / social unrest and debates
In 1964 several murders occurred. The victims were civil rights workers from the freedom summer movement Watts riot (1965) was an event where an African American motorist was unlawfully arrested State troopers and white civilians attacked unarmed civil rights activists in an event known as Bloody Sunday during the Selma March. They used weapons such as tear gas and billy clubs (1965)
