Restrictive and Nonrestrictive Clauses
An adjective clause is either restrictive or nonrestrictive. A restrictive clause contains information necessary to the sentence’s meaning. A nonrestrictive clause contains information that can be left out without affecting the basic meaning of the sentence.

The man is fixing my bike. The car I want is out of my price range. My brother cannot read. Nonrestrictive Clauses Edgar Allen Poe, who wrote “The Raven”, is one of the greatest American poets. The man, who is very tall, is fixing my bike. We did not pay our bills, so our power will be shut off.

On the evening of March 3, 1991 Rodney King was caught by LAPD after a high speed chase. The officers pulled him out of the car and beat him, which was caught on tape as evidence. The events that followed caused lively debates and discussions about race and the police in LA. Rodney King Riots
