1 How is a loss of innocence presented in Darkness Out There and Chemistry

2 You need to show whole text coverage to track the loss of innocence
Start – how is innocence presented? Turning point – what happens? What is destroyed? What is learned? End Is the loss of innocence positively presented? What is the lasting impact?

3 One possible approach to planning:
Chemistry Darkness Out There In the exposition, we are shown the boy’s innocence through ……………… At the start we are shown Sandra’s innocence through……………….. We see this innocence irrevocably changed when ……. which is shown through……………… We see this innocence damaged when …………………….. which is shown through In the story’s resolution, we see that the boy’s loss of innocence has resulted in ……… In the story’s resolution, Sandra’s loss of innocence is presented as ………… You would pepper quotes and incorporate Ao2 analysis in each section Your essay would have three sections Your essay would explore the texts chronologically

4 You need to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of A02 – methods of presentation
Setting Imagery Characterisation Direct speech Internal thoughts Narrative viewpoint – how the story is told Structure – how it progresses and how innocence is lost Genre Sentence structure Juxtaposition Repetition Foreshadowing Use SQI loosely to develop a flowing, exploratory style of analysis that develops an idea whilst allowing space to dig deep . You can aim to discuss more than one AO2 method within the same SQI paragraph

5 Alternative planning models: ideas based (non-chronological)
Section 1: The dramatic presentation of the pivotal moment of character development Section 2: Both writers create a villain to is the catalyst for the loss of innocence; their actions and words are shown to threaten the protagonist’s innocence in both stories Section 3: The way in which the loss of innocence is presented in each story’s ending and how this contrasts with the exposition of the story. How does the writer use the character development – to explore what themes and ideas.

6 Or another: Section 1: setting and presentation of innocence at start and end of stories (circular structure) Section 2: how each protagonist reacts to traumatising words/actions – what action does each take? Section 3: what deeper meanings are explored through the characters’ loss of innocence: disrespectful attitudes to the elderly / suicide / irresponsible parenting / generational difference / loyalty and betrayal / prejudice / deception / (writer’s intention & context)

7 If I was you, I would plan:
Each section: Topic sentence Quotes Ao2 analysis including terminology (remember: 1) this has great weighting 2) be brave and try to include the a wide range of devices, not just analysis of the vocabulary) Ao3 contextual inference Writer’s intention

8 How to compare: interwoven or separate?
