What is Reverse Marketing?
Reverse marketing is the concept of marketing in which the jobseeker (or someone on behalf of the jobseeker) approaches a company and “sells” their attributes when a job vacancy is not advertised. This is in contrast to traditional marketing whereby the company targets jobseekers and seeks to attract a pool of candidates. You can Reverse Market by physically attending the workplace, making a phone call, sending a letter or . If you have a LinkedIn account you can send a message to the Hiring Manager of the company! Be creative!

Why Reverse Market?
7
Why Reverse Market? Reverse Marketing yourself is a very valuable tactic when seeking employment as it highlights you as a candidate who possesses great initiative and a genuine interest in the company. Remember it is estimated that 80% of vacancies are filled before they are advertised. Therefore when applying for jobs through the paper or online we are only reaching 20% of the market! The other main benefit is you target employers where you have a genuine interest rather than solely applying for what appears to be available!

Planning to Reverse Market

Planning to Reverse Market
Before you start approaching companies make sure you have a way of recording who you are contacting and what the results are, this way you can follow up your previous hard work! If possible get an understanding of the positions the company is likely to hold prior to the contact. Have a clear idea of why you particularly want to work for that company – they will want to know why you picked them!

Who am I going to Reverse Market to?
11
Who am I going to Reverse Market to?
Any company that you want to work for! Companies that hold the opportunities you desire and the positions that match your skill set. Your aim will be to get past the Receptionist because you can’t count on them to leave your message with the Hiring Manager. Ask to speak to the Human Resources Manager or the person responsible for hiring.
12
What do I say?
13
What do I say………. When marketing yourself don’t forget to be yourself! Be your most confident and genuine you! After all, if you sound confident they will have faith in your ability to perform and in your interest in their company. To make sure you get your major points across in the most succinct manner the conversation may go something like this: You: “Hello my name is ….. could I speak to the Human Resources Manager please” Receptionist: “What is the nature of your call?” You: “I would like to express my interest in working for insert company name here” …… Human Resources Manager: “Hello, how can I help you?” You: “Hello my name is…. I am a insert profession/trade here and I am very interested in working for insert company name here and was wondering whether you had any vacancies at the moment?” The conversation may go in any direction from here…. The results you can expect are on the next slide!

What do I say………. Investigative Phone Call Technique.
Sometimes we may not know enough about the industry we are trying to get into or the position we ultimately wish to have. Try calling an employer and asking……… i.e.“I am very keen to get into the aged care industry can I have 5 minutes of your time to ask you some questions that would help me. I would really appreciate your time” Ask… “What skills do I need? What is a good entry level position for someone like me? How did you get your break? Do you have any entry level positions? Do you know anyone who has an entry level position or might be hiring?”

What results can I expect?

What results can I expect?
Be yourself but remember it takes practice…………… hearing “no” won’t kill you! Persistence and follow up are key! I do this everyday and I can tell you I am expected to place many people each month and even on my bad months ………. I do!
17
And finally…….. “Knowing is not enough; we must apply.
Willing is not enough; we must do.” Goethe
