6 Problems in organisations arise from people, so recruit them properly, then develop them. RECRUIT THEM PROPERLY!

Discipline differences are important to take on board - chemical engineering vs other engineering? Set expectations of performance - good teaching is the norm, fairness and consistency Transparency, ie workload models, finance etc - also works as motivation? Growing the talent pool - Faculty fellowship academy story

Venture to ‘home-grow’ future academic leaders, by accelerating their learning, skills and experience. Training needs analysis and PDP Mentor assigned outside the home department A variety of workshops to support them Peer support with all aspects of development Support for fellowship proposals

13 Conclusions Recruitment is key – don’t rush it, it’s a big investment!
The leadership challenges have changed over the years – as has HE Have access to people who can help as mentors, coaches, role models University promotion criteria have to be clear Talent development and retention are too important to be left to chance Succession planning – does anyone do this well?
