3 Pronunciation Guide A pronunciation guide is usually located in the glossary and tells you how to pronounce words. It also shows you where the syllables are located. Example: Explosion [ecks-plo- shun]

4 Heading A heading tells you what you will read about in the article. Example: Person Steps on Mars!

5 Italics Words in italics are slanted words because the author wants you to notice the words. Example: I am Davy Crockett & I am real hungry!

6 Text Box A text box is a small box that can give you some information. Example: A text box might say: Male elephants can be 12,000 to 13,000 pounds! Thats 6 tons!

7 Caption A caption tells you a sentence or two about a picture. Example: These monkeys are five years old.

8 Label A label tells you what the picture is and it is 3 or less words. Example: Cougar

9 Index A index tells you what page a word is on. Example: Cake 33, 64 Pie 57, 88 Brownies 67, 89

10 Diagram A diagram is a picture that has labels. Example: Head, Abdomen, Legs

11 Glossary A glossary is a mini-dictionary at the end of a book. Example: Chicken: A common domestic fowl raised for food; hen or rooster.

12 Table of Contents A table of contents tells you where a heading will be in a book. Example: Dogs----1 Cats----5Birds----10

13 Title A title is on the front of the book and tells you what the book will be about. Example: How To Run Away From Bears

14 Subtitle A subtitle tells you information about the title. Example: This book is a complete map of all the mountains in the world.

15 Subheading A subheading breaks up an article into smaller pieces. Example: If the article is about cows, it might say Utters.

16 Colored Words Colored words are words that are colored. They stand out. Example: The Powerball is coming!
