Humans
3
Average Human Weight World average of both men and women ????
4
Average Human Weight ~ 137 lbs
5
Average Human Weight ~ 137 lbs
6
Heaviest Bird ????
7
Heaviest Bird Ostrich ~ 280 lbs
8
Heaviest Land Animal ????
9
Heaviest Land Animal African Elephant ~ 16,500 lbs
10
Most Massive Sea Dweller
????
11
Most Massive Sea Dweller
Blue Whale ~ 400,000 lbs
12
Let’s Get Some Perspective
400,000 lbs is pretty big How big is it really?
13
How many J. Biebs would equal the mass of an Ostrich?
Best Guess
14
How many J. Biebs would equal the mass of an Ostrich?
J. Biebs = 137 lbs Ostrich = 280 lbs
15
How many J. Biebs would equal the mass of an Ostrich?
16
How many Ostriches equal an Elephant?
17
How many Ostriches equal an Elephant?
Ostrich = 280 lbs African Elephant = 16,500 lbs
18
59 Ostriches = 1 Elephant
19
How many Elephants per Whale?
20
How many Elephants per Whale?
African Elephant = 16,500 lbs Blue Whale = 400,000 lbs
21
24 Elephants = 1 Blue Whale
22
3,000 Humans = 1 Whale
23
Most Massive Life Form on Earth
????
24
Not the Blue Whale

Redwood Tree
27
Redwood Tree 4,000,000 lbs
28
Red Wood Tree Enough timber to build 40 5-room homes
29
Red Wood Tree
30
10 Blue Whales = 1 Redwood
31
Fill Martin Stadium = 1 Redwood

33
So…
34
So… Where does the mass of a tree come from?
36
PHOTOSYNTHESIS Autotrophic Process: Plants and plant-like organisms make their energy (glucose) from sunlight. Stored as carbohydrate in their bodies. 6CO2 + 6H2O + sunlight C6H12O6 + 6O2
37
Why is Photosynthesis important?
Makes organic molecules (glucose) out of inorganic materials (carbon dioxide and water). It begins all food chains/webs. Thus all life is supported by this process. It also makes oxygen gas!!
38
Photosynthesis-starts to ecological food webs!
39
Photo-synthesis means "putting together with light." Plants use sunlight to turn water and carbon dioxide into glucose. Glucose is a kind of sugar. Plants use glucose as food for energy and as a building block for growing. Autotrophs make glucose and heterotrophs are consumers of it.
40
How do we know that plants make carbohydrates from just carbon dioxide water and light energy?
Experiments! For example: Jan Baptisa van Helmont (1648) planted a willow branch weighing 5 pounds into 200 pounds of soil and then after 4 years the tree weighed 169 lbs. and the soil was still nearly 200 lbs.
