28 Life Cycle of an Insect The life cycle of an insect has four stages.
It is called “metamorphosis.”

29 A butterfly starts life as a very small, round or oval egg.
Stage 1 A butterfly starts life as a very small, round or oval egg. Stage 2 When the egg finally hatches, a caterpillar (larva) comes out. The caterpillar then eats the leaf it was born on and grows big quickly.

30 As soon as a caterpillar is done growing, they form into a pupa.
Stage 3 As soon as a caterpillar is done growing, they form into a pupa. It may look like the caterpillar is just resting from the outside, but inside the caterpillar is rapidly changing. The caterpillars are going through ‘metamorphosis,’ to become a butterfly. Stage 4 When the caterpillar has done all of its changing a beautiful butterfly comes out!
