MRI contrast-enhancement and progression of X-ALD. The progression of the brain MRI abnormality was assessed in 43 male X-ALD patients (mean age 12.9 years; range: 3 to 51 years). Severity of brain MRI abnormality was assessed with the scoring system devised by Loes et al.43 In 22 patients who showed no gadolinium-contrast enhancement on T1-weighted images, the MRI severity score remained constant in 19 (A), while the abnormality progressed in 19 out of 21 patients who had shown contrast enhancement (B).
