Surrealism

- A controversial movement in art and literature between the two World Wars in which the artist attempted to portray, express, or interpret the workings of the subconscious mind.
- Surrealist works can have a realistic, though irrationally style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies.

3. Surrealist Methods
Many of the artists used a method of techniques, such as automatic writing, self-induced hallucinations, and word games like the exquisite corpse, to study and uproot their latent feelings and behaviors as a cure for what they believed to be the restrictive rules and morals of society.
Surrealists were interested in exposing truths of the inner worlds of sexuality, desire, and violence.

There is a contrast between the actual piece of music
These girls walking in a hotel hallway, doors closed and then the open one at the end
The flower which has climbed up the staircase
The girls are strange, their hair, the clothes falling off, strange coloration of the hair= one who is almost green in color
Freud wrote the uncanning to reference eta hoffmann’s short stories ie. The nutcracker…. Things happen that don’t happen in real life
Hoffmann’s stories where men fall in love with dolls- this could reference a doll with the girl in the blonde… the exposed hairline

-Often called an erotic Surrealist for his daring representations of sexuality, relationships, and human encounter.
-Isupov takes narrative subject matter and merges it with ceramic sculptural form.
-Integration of two-dimensional imagery, with three-dimensional form.
-Unexpected illustrations act like private thoughts and dreams of the subconscious mind.
- “Isupov’s sculptures communicate thoughtful expressions, and personal stories worn on the surface of their skin.”

-Influenced by New Mexico’s exotic landscape, flora, animals and indigenous cultures
-Incorporates his infatuation of animals, insects, reptiles and amphibians, which sparked at a young age
Integration of two-dimensional imagery, with three-dimensional form with combinations of human/animal, culture/nature, architecture/organism
