2. Why I chose this topic:
I think it is important to truly understand a subject before passing judgement on it
Many people in our country assume that all Muslims are extremists, and I think it is important to get rid of that single story
Many Muslims are being discriminated against today because of their faith and how Isis has distorted the true message of it

This is significant because by establishing a caliphate, ISIS is trying to expand its influence and make other nations Muslim

7. What is ISIS? An Islamic group that is very radical in their beliefs

This means that isis claimed authority over all Muslims
This Islamic group split from Al Qaida in 2011
The writing on their flag translates to the shahada or the declaration of the Islamic Faith

8. Facts about ISIS
93% of Muslims do not support extremist views of terrorism
Muslim scholars published a 17 page letter in many languages that condemned Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as the caliphate and ISIS's views
Muslims around the world disagree with ISIS and want it gone just as much as everyone else

9. Misuse of Islamic Teachings

Has said, "There are only two camps, the camp of truth and its followers, and the camp of falsehood and its factions" (ISIS)
Is very violent especially towards the western nations> believes everyone who is not Muslim needs to be eliminated
To ISIS jihad means religious warfare in the name of Allah
Declared a caliphate to have control over all Muslims
Through history was religiously tolerant to other religions around them- Christianity, Judaism
The word Islam literally means "the path to peace" which contradicts ISIS's actions
Jihad for Muslims today refers to the struggle to submit to Allah and avoid evil
If there needs to be violence at all it is "solely for wars of self defense" (Alles).
The declared caliphate has been "condemned worldwide by Islamic Leaders who denounce the groups' violent intolerance and its association with the religion of Islam" (ISIS).

The Quran is against violence except for times of self defense
ISIS takes passages out of context to serve their needs of justification
"Do not take life, which God has made sacred, except by right: if anyone is killed wrongfully We have given authority to the defender of his rights, but he should not be excessive in taking life" (Quran: 17:33).
"We decreed to the Children of Israel that if anyone kills a person– unless in retribution for murder or spreading corruption in the land– it is as if he kills all mankind, while if any saves a life it is as if he saves the lives of all mankind" (Quran: 5:32)

11. Misuse of Jihad Has two historical Islamic meanings
In one sense it can refer to the internal
struggle all Muslims go through to keep close to Allah
It also means religious warfare
This is how ISIS is interpreting it
Only a "recognized Islamic government" can use jihad for warfare, and Muslims have not recognized ISIS as their government (Campo).
In the Quran, jihad is described as "The servant's struggle against selfish desire" (Campo).
"Some invoke a hadith in which Muhammad addressed soldiers returning from battle: 'You have come for the best, from the lesser jihad to the greater jihad.'" (Campo).

12. Misuse of Caliphate
The caliphate was the head of the Islamic faith both religiously and politically
They represented the unity of the Islamic faith (Keaney)
The caliphate was removed after the fall of the Ottoman Empire and was never re-established in the Arab Countries
In 2014 Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi proclaimed himself caliphate
Muslims do not agree with his position of power or his violent actions with ISIS (Nature of Islam)
