What is Blended Learning?
The definition of blended learning is a formal education program in which a student learns: at least in part through online learning, with some element of student control over time, place, path, and/or pace; at least in part in a supervised brick-and-mortar location away from home; and the modalities along each student’s learning path within a course or subject are connected to provide an integrated learning experience. Source: Michael B. Horn and Heather Staker, Blended: Using Disruptive Innovation to Improve Schools (San Francisco: Jossey-Bass, 2014).
5
Blended Music Learning? – a possible idea
Based on a music program that meets twice a week: One class of group-based instruction (band, choir, instruments, theory, etc.) One class of individual learning (recording, editing, research) (modified as necessary to meet needs of concerts, progress, etc.)
6
What do you need? Digital Audio/Video recording device(s) (iPads, video camera, smartphone, etc.) Storage device or place Computer lab time or personal computers A schedule of time for quiet recording
7
How does it work? One period a week for the the first few weeks is devoted to teaching students how to use the technology and software they will need to complete this program An outline for the year is given to the students (what will we be learning in class and when?) For example: Sept - Musical rounds, Oct – Ukulele, Nov. Drumming, etc. Students can plan their course for recordings as they wish
8
How does it work? The chosen thing to be recorded can be something being studied or learned at school or outside of school Students may choose any instrument, voice, or other form of sound for each recording Can be individual or small group Students are required to make periodic entries into their folder (once a month?) Students can record whenever they are ready and may record multiple tracks during each designated period.
9
School Device or BYOD? Depending on school and/or district technology policies, Bring Your Own Device might be a possibility Storage of final product must be accessible to teacher for assessment BYOD offers more versatility for students to control the time and place of parts of their learning, but also comes with its own pitfalls such as liability for loss/theft/damage or inappropriate use of the technology outside of class
10
What is the Final Product?
Near the end of the school year, students organize and prepare all their tracks for their album (artwork, burning to CD or putting on USB/cloud storage) Dependent on the grade level and permissions, this could lead into multiple cross curricular projects. (Entrepreneur fair, Marketing, Business, Math, etc.) Dependent on proficiency level and permissions, albums or tracks could be published to social media sites like YouTube, or on services such as iTunes (Apple Music) Students are also encouraged to perform for their peers at least once or twice throughout the year
11
What are the Hurdles? Privacy and Permission
Without 100% permission from everyone involved in each work, they cannot be published anywhere. Permission is needed for every app / software used. It should give the parents/guardians detailed information on privacy risks and how they will be used. Must be an alternative for those who opt not to participate in the program
12
Benefits Students can apply their music learning and have a tangible artifact to take home Offers students choice in terms of time, place, path, and pace to varying degrees Students can showcase their musical talents learned outside of school Opportunity for collaboration with peers that could continue outside of class
13
Assessment By default creates a digital portfolio for music
Entries could be uploaded into ePortfolio solutions such as FreshGrade Teachers would decide the desired outcomes to be assessed based on their class composition/grade and ability
