1 There are 1000 of these in a kilogram
There are 100 of these in a metre How many millilitres are there in a litre? There are 1000 of these in a Tonne There are 10 of these in a centimetre There are 1000 metres in a ……..? How many millilitres are there in 1 centilitre? There are 1000 of these in a litre There are 1000 of these in a metre. How many centilitres are there in a litre?

2 Today Calculate real-life and scale measurements
Interpret real life measurements from a scale diagram Work out a distance on a map Draw an accurate scale plan using a given scale expressed as a ratio Convert scales to other units of measure, e.g from cm to m Solve problems involving scale

3 Proportion Hours 1 2 Miles 45
If I travel at 45mph how many miles would I travel in 2 hours? What about 3 hours? What about 9 hours? Hours 1 2 Miles 45

4 Name 5 things you might use a scale drawing or model for
Where is scale used? eg 1:50

5 The average man is between 1.7 m and 1.9 m tall
Estimations 11m The average man is between 1.7 m and 1.9 m tall

6 Estimate the heights of the buildings shown

7 Estimate the length of the whale:

8 1cm : 10cm Drawing size Real-life size
Using a scale of 1:10, we need to divide a real measurement by 10 to get the scale measurement, but multiply by 10 to get the real-life measurement. 1cm : 10cm Drawing size Real-life size Scale drawing size = real-life size ÷ 10 Real-life size = scale size x 10 For example, using the scale 1cm : 5cm: If I have a measurement of 10cm on my scale diagram what would the measurement be in real life? What is the scale drawing size of a 20cm real-life object? What is the real-life size of a 50cm scale drawing object? What measurement on the scale diagram would I draw to represent 5m in real life? What is the real-life size of a 10mm line on the scale drawing?

9 Calculate the real-life and scale measurements:
Use the scale 1:20. Calculate the real-life and scale measurements: Scale measurement 2 3 5 6 9 10 Real-life measurement 20 140  160

11 N Distance to Town 40 cm Real Distance : 80 km Scale 1 cm : 2 km Distance from Town to Shops 10 cm Airport Local Town Real Distance : 20 km Hospital Shops Distance from shops to Hospital 4.2 cm Real Distance : 8.4 km

12 N Distance to Town 40 cm Real Distance : 120 km Scale 1 cm :3 km Distance from Town to Shops 10 cm Airport Local Town Real Distance : 30 km Hospital Shops Distance from shops to Hospital 4.2 cm Real Distance : 12.6 km

13 N Distance to Town 40 cm Real Distance : 1000 m Scale 2 cm : 50 m Distance from Town to Shops 10 cm Airport Local Town Real Distance : 250 m Hospital Shops Distance from shops to Hospital 4.2 cm Real Distance : 105 m

16 How tall is the Eiffel Tower?
Scale: 1cm = 10m 300m The model has a height of 30 cm. This is 30 times bigger that the 1 cm on the scale so multiply 1 x 30 = 30cm. Do the same to the other side of the scale so 10m x 30 = 300m. 30cm Scale model Actual size

17 How tall is the Empire State Building?
Scale: 1 cm : 5m 380m 76cm

18 How tall is the Statue of Liberty?
Scale 1 cm = 3m 90m Height of the statue of liberty = 90m 30cm

19 How tall is the model of Big Ben?
Scale: 1 cm : 3 m 96m 32cm This time you know the actual height. This goes under the 3m on the scale. Find out how many lots of 3 go into 96 so divide. 96 ÷ 3 = 32 cm

20 How tall is the model of Ben Nevis?
Scale 1 cm : 50 m 1350m 27cm

21 A model of a car is made using a scale of 1:10
If the door of the model is 15cm long, what is the length, in metres, of the real car door? The scale is 1:10, so for every 1cm it is 10cm in real life 15cm (scale measurement) x 10 = 150cm 150 ÷ 100 = 1.5m If the real length of the car is 6m, what is the length of the model in cm? The scale is 1:10, so for every 10cm in real life it is going to 1cm on the model 6 ÷ 10 = 0.6m 0.6 x 100 = 60cm

22 Question 1 A B C D What is the actual height of a wall that measures
6cm on the scale drawing with a scale of 1:50? A 600 cm B 120 cm C 14 cm D 300 cm

23 Question 2 What does 5 cm on a map with scale 1:200 represent in actual distance? A 1000 cm B 2500 cm C 150 cm D 1500 cm

24 Question 3 A house plan is drawn to a scale of 1:100. The lounge on the drawing is 9 cm long. What is the length of the lounge in metres? A 90 cm B 45 m C 9 m D 30 m

25 Question 4 A house plan is drawn to a scale of 1:50. The lounge on the drawing is 15 cm long. What is the length of the lounge in metres? A 50 m B 7.5 m C 5 m D 65 m

26 Question 5 A model is to be made of a new college which is 1125m in length. The suggested scale is 1: How long will the model be? A 9 cm B 1.5 m C 2 m D 3.5 m
