Force on cart lab And you
2
Purpose: To provide evidence for Newton’s law that:
Force = ∑ mass (acceleration)
3
The process of data collection
Force = ∑ mass (acceleration) All masses In Kg!!!! F = mg F1 = (mass of hanger and 1 nut) (9.8) Mass of cart, all 6 nuts, and hanger a1: Measured by computer (~ 1.5 m/s/s) F2 = (mass of hanger and 2 nuts) (9.8) Stays the same because You just moved some Mass from the cart to the hanger a2: Measured by computer with a value greater Than that in a1 F3 = (mass of hanger and 3 nuts) (9.8) Stays the same a3: Measured by computer with a value greater Than that in a2 Repeat 2 more times
4
What about the graph? Force (N) N = kg (m/s/s) Slope = F = kg (m/s/s)
a (m/s/s) = Kg Acceleration (m/s/s)
5
THEREFORE: The slope of the graph represents the ∑mass of the cart, nuts, and hanger (in kg) So if your slope value is close to your ∑mass value, then you have provided support for newton’s F = ma law!!! Do not forget to do a percent error calculation that compares your slope value to your measured ∑mass value. Thank you – now please go to the computer lab to type up your report
