The Characteristics of Living Things
Mod. B U.1. L.1 There are special characteristics that all living organisms share:
2
Following directions;
A Study Aid Create a Foldable for The Characteristics of Living Things
3
Question! Write down 4 living and 4 non-living things you interact with everyday. Then View Untd. Streaming Video on Living Things
4
All living things are … Made up of cells
5
What is a cell? A cell is the smallest unit of organisms that carry on the functions of life Parts : nucleus, cell membrane , organelles, cytoplasm Unicellular – one cell Multicellular – many cells Specialization- to have special functions
6
Cells ….
8
2. Made up of Chemicals DNA – Deoxyribonucleic acid
Carries the genetic code and instructions for all functions Proteins, Carbohydrates, Fats & Oils, Water, Oxygen, Carbon dioxide, Water ~ 70% of the body mass
9
3. Living things Reproduce
Make new organisms, offspring, like themselves 2 types of reproduction: Asexual – A single parent Sexual – Two parents
10
4. Living things grow and develop
Growth - Unicellular organisms – cell gets larger Multicellular organisms – number of cells increase Development – Organism grows and passes through different stages of maturity
11
5. Living things use energy
Metabolism - the sum of all processes in an organism – for life to go on. Living things take in or make their own food/source of energy
12
6. Living things sense and respond to changes in their environment.
Stimulus Response Adjust to changes Homeostasis Adapt to changes Adaptation, Evolution?
13
7. Living things can move Some organisms move more than others
Plant movement may not be visible to th naked eye, but can turn leave towards sunlight, open a flower, etc Animals can move rapidly
14
8. Living things have life-spans
Organisms stop living or divide into new organisms (daughters). - Is why reproduction and adaptation are so important!
15
Some Life Spans TYPE MAX LIFE SPAN Sea anemone 70 yrs
Elephant yrs Blue whale yrs Tortoise yrs Human yrs Giant sequoia 4000 yrs Creosote bush 11, yrs TYPE MAX LIFE SPAN Adult mayfly 1-3 days Marigold yr Mouse yrs Guppy yrs Coyote yrs Giant spider 20 yrs Toad yrs Lobster yrs Crocodile yrs

Homework Compare and Contrast a Dog and a Car, OR
A Human and a Computer (Tell how they are similar and how they are different in terms of the 7 characteristics of living things. Organize your thoughts in a table
18
Compare & Contrast Table
DOG CAR Compare (Similarities) Each similarity must match on both sides Contrast (Differences) Each difference must match on both sides
