3 Election of 1824 All were considered “favorite sons”
Favorite sons- received backing from there home states rather than the National Party John Quincy Adams

4 Election of 1824 In the election Jackson received the majority of the popular vote. No candidate received more than half of the electoral vote.

5 Election of 1824 Under the 12th Amendment when no candidate receives more than half the vote the House of Representatives selects the president. (2)

6 Election of 1824 While the House was preparing to vote, Clay cut a deal with Adams to defeat Jackson. Henry Clay then was appointed Sec. of State Jackson’s followers accused Adams & Clay of “corrupt bargaining” & stealing the election.

7 Election of 1824 The “Corrupt Bargain” was not viewed by the public as ethical of John Quincy Adams. Adams was a proponent of a stronger Navy & scientific expeditions requiring larger spending by the government

8 Election of 1824 The public wanted a more limited government.
Congress shot down many of Adams’ proposals. The election of 1826 with the House allowed Adams’ enemies to control the legislature

9 Election of 1828 By 1828 the republicans divided into 2 parties
Democratic- Republicans supported Jackson National Republicans – supported Adams

10 Election of 1828 Democratic- Republicans supported states rights (Individualists, frontiersmen, laborers in big cities) National Republicans – wanted a strong central gov. (Roads, Buildings)

11 Election of 1828 Both parties resorted to “mudslinging” or trying to defame the reputation of the candidates with insults. Also introduced were slogans, rallies & BBQ’s

12 Election of 1828 Andrew Jackson won the election with his support of state’s rights issues. Jackson won with a landslide of 56% of the vote. 11-1A

13 Jackson as President Was admired as: A war hero A self-made man
A patriot After his inauguration had a reception at the White House and people trashed it.

14 Jackson as President Jackson was born poor Lost his parents at age 15
Fought in the Revolution Defeated the creek Indians and the British in War of 1812 Americans recognized him as one of them.

15 Jackson as President Jackson promised “Equal protection & equal benefits” at least for men In the early years suffrage or right to vote was for men who owned property or paid taxes.
