Office attempts to renew the licensing token for shared computer activation on a regular basis once the token is 50% expired, to help users who don't always have Internet access.
Reduced functionality mode
When using shared computer activation, if the user closes the sign-in window or the user's licensing token expires, the user can still use the Office app, but the app will be in reduced functionality mode.

Group Policy can now be used to enable or disable Shared Computer Activation, and configure the license cache location.

Managed “reduced functionality” experience
Additional control over the experience when a user does not have an Office client license. For example, a hospital where machines are shared between E1 and E3 users.
