OUT-OF-CLASS SEGMENT 5 IN-CLASS SEGMENT 9 EVALUATION 16

4 Dr.D.Kavitha TOPIC : Combinational circuit design using NAND gates
COURSE : Digital Systems DOMAIN : Electrical Engineering TARGET AUDIENCE : Electrical and Electronic Engineering IInd year students AFFILIATION (UNIVERSITY/COLLEGE) : Thiagarajar College of Engineering IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

5 Out-of-class Activity Design -1
Learning Objective(s) of Out-of-Class Activity: To draw logical circuits using universal ‘NAND’ gates Key Concept(s) to be covered: universal ‘NAND’ gates to design combinational circuits IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

6 Out-of-class Activity Design - 2
Uploaded Video URL V1: V2: License of Video Creative-Commons CONCEPT VIDEO SEGMENT DURATION (in min) Logical circuits design - I V2 :00.00 to 6:48 6:48 Logical circuits design - II V2 : 6:49 to 11.30 4:40 Logical circuits using NAND gate V1 4:35 * Ensure that you give a Creative-Commons License to the uploaded video IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

7 Out-of-class Activity Design - 3
Aligning Assessment with Learning Objective Learning Objective Assessment Strategy Expected duration (in min) Additional Instructions (if any) To draw logical circuits using universal ‘NAND’ gates Design a combinational circuit using (i) AND/OR gates (ii) using NAND gates with 3 inputs x,y,z and 3 outputs a,b,c.  When binary input is 0,1,2,3,the binary output is three greater than input . When the binary input is 4,5,6,7, the binary output is two less than the input. 15 See the videos. Do the problem in note book and show to the instructor atleast 3 hours prior to the class. ** It is recommended that total duration of activity and video should not be greater than one lecture duration IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

8 Additional Slides for Out-of-Class Design
After doing the out of class design, students will be able to approach a digital problem with logical thinking and able to think over a problem with output requirements They also got idea how to implement the logic circuits with NAND gates in a simple way. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

9 About In-Class Segment
Make sure that In-Class segment contain activities for effective learning In active learning student goes beyond listening, copying of notes, execution of prescribed procedures Students are required to talk, write, reflect and express their thinking Engage students in higher-order thinking (Analyze-Evaluate- Create) Ensure that students get feedback on their work, either from peers or you. Ensure to provide summary that connects Out-of-Class and In-Class activities IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

10 In-class Activity Design -1
Learning Objective(s) of In-Class Activity: To obtain the expression in SOP form for practical problems and to draw logical circuits using universal ‘NAND’ gates Key Concept(s) to be covered: Solving practical problems universal ‘NAND’ gates to design combinational circuits IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

11 In-class Activity Design -2
Active Learning activity(ies) that you plan to do Think – Pair – Share Team – Pair - Solo IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

12 Additional Slides for In-Class Activity Design
Think Phase -              [ 6 minutes ] Question:  Design a combinational circuit with 4 inputs w,x,y,z and 2 outputs a and b using NAND gates.   When binary input is 1 to F (ie to 1111) ,the binary output is the count of zeroes in the input . When the binary input is 0 (ie.0000) the binary output is 0 (ie.00).  What Teacher does  - Poses the question, asks students to think individually and write in their notebook What students does - Thinks individually about the posed question, Writes answer in the book IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

13 Additional Slides for In-Class Activity Design
Pair Phase -                [ 3 minutes ] Question: Discuss your answer with your neighbour and try to obtain the correct truth table for the questions. What Teacher does  - Poses the question, asks students to pair up and discuss, goes around the class to check whether students are discussing, provides clues to pairs who are in doubt  What students does - Pairs up with neighbour, Check each other’s answer, and share their ideas and conclude to the correct truth table. Share Phase -              [10 minutes] Share solutions with the whole class and summarizes the key ideas. What Teacher Does - Notes down each of the answers in the board, summarizes the key concepts involved in these problems and clarifies students questions. What Student Does – Poses questions and get clarified using peer solutions and teachers teaching. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

14 Additional Slides for In-Class Activity Design
TEAM – PAIR – SOLO TEAM PHASE: (6 minutes) Students are formed team with 6 members and asked to develop a real world digital problem. PAIR PHASE: (5 minutes) Students are paired and determine the expected truth table for the identified problem. SOLO PHASE: (10 minutes) Students individually solves the problem and represent the solution using NAND gates. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

15 Additional Slides for In-Class Activity Design
What Teacher Does – Helps the students to identify suitable problem, guides them to select an optimum problem and clarifies students questions. What Student Does – Works in team, gives ideas, evaluate them and finalize the problem in team, write truth table in pair, and works out the problem individually . Also Poses questions and get clarified from instructor. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

16 Assessment is performed by evaluating the answers for these questions/activities and students feedback to ensure the achievement of learning outcomes. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay

17 Justify why the above is an active learning strategy
In the above TPS strategy, students are actively engaged in the class as teacher is not lecturing but roaming around the class. Also there is a possibility of peer learning to handle higher order problems. Suitable feedback is provided for their thinking either by peer discussions or teacher’s summary. IDP in Educational Technology, IIT Bombay
