Long history of Church planting Four phases 1652 – 1837 Church planting took place through the hiving off existing churches. 9 Churches was started in this period Cape Town 1686 Stellenbosch 1691 Paarl – Strooidak 1792 Graaff Reinette

16 Decisions: The Synod confirms the missional identity of the Church
Evangelism is a core calling of the Church New Church Development is adopted as a strategy to reach out to the unchurched and diverse society. A New Church Development strategy must be tabled at the next general synod.

17 General Synod 2004 A report containing guidelines for new Church Development was accepted

18 General Synod 2007 A regiment for New Church Development was accepted
Decisions: Church Boards are requested to consider new Church Developments as a proven way to create Church Growth. New Church Development must receive the necessary attention in our theological training.

The History of New Church Development in the DRC since 2002. Ways to develop new Churches Strategic guidelines for developing new Churches.

20 Decisions The General Synod accept New Church Development as a high priority Material must be developed to be used by Churches, presbytaries and synods to train new church developers.

Decisions in 2007: To make New Church Development a high priority To create an permanent joint office for New Church Development To form a joint board with the URC for New Church Development An agreement to form a board was accepted and a regiment for New Church Development was accepted at the synod.

39 What did we learn as DRC family over the past 10 years?
Not only one model. Our communities changed dramatically. Many church planting opportunities opened. We can’t do it alone. We need church planting training. Transformation starts within the existing churches.

40 What common values did we discover in new churches?
A focus on the triune God. Being incarnational. Being transformational. Becoming disciple-making. Being relational.

41 What core elements (principals) did we identify in the process of planting new churches?
Seize the mission of God. Internalize missional thinking and behavior. Exegete the culture. Incarnate the gospel. Multiple disciple makers. Form a community of disciples. Mobilize leaders / teams. Back to multiplication.
