Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 20113 MME uses principles of mathematics, materials, graphics, physics and economics to conceive, design, develop, manufacture, operate and maintain processes and devices that benefit society. MME is the broadest of the engineering disciplines, and is present in every sector (industry, transportation, education, health care, government). What is MME ?

Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 20114 Is MME for you? Are you interested in how things work? Are you interested in how things are made? Would you like to invent something? Would you like to run your own company or consulting firm one day? Would you like to have an impact on how the world produces and uses energy to do useful things? Would you like to help make the world a better place for everyone?

Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201120 The Program Designed to give you a solid foundation in MME Designed to be flexible if you are not yet committed to a specialty. Can Choose from three options –General MME (ME1) –Materials (ME2) (more … room 306 at 7:30, 7:50 ) –Biomechanical (ME3) (more … room 315 at 7:30, 7:50)

Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201121 Common 2 nd and mostly in 3 rd year, electives and team design project in 4 th year General Option ME1, concentrations in: Aerospace Engineering Energy and Fluid Systems Manufacturing Engineering Mechatronics/Robotics Engineering Materials Option ME2 in years 3 and 4 Biomechanical Option ME3 in years 3 and 4 The Program
22
Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201122 Learning Experience Theory (lectures) + practice (labs) Technical + Communication Hands on -- Lab and project based Work alone and in teams, just like in the real world
23
Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201123 ME1 General Option Gives you the basics and then some… –Math and numerical methods, computing –Thermodynamics, fluids and heat transfer –Solid mechanics and dynamics –Graphical, written and verbal communication –Material Properties –Electronics, Mechatronics –Design and Manufacturing –Project Management Wide range of technical electives so you can try out some specialty fields
24
Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201124 Materials Option ME2 (2 courses in 3 rd year, 3 from 6 courses in 4 th year) Development of improved and new materials Production, use and characterization of manufactured materials Investigate fractures, fatigue failures, corrosion and radiation damage Metallic, plastic and ceramic materials No device without materials! before after dramatic dimensional change in stainless steel due to exposure in a nuclear reactor (MECH 483)
25
Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201125 Biomechanical Option ME3 Get a degree in mechanical engineering with biomechanical engineering option stated on the transcript Human Mobility Research Centre (HMRC) Model follows that of ME2 materials option (2 courses in 3 rd year, 3 from 6 courses in 4 th year) commercial hip implant

Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201126 Advice for choosing a Discipline ? Select the discipline that will hold your interest for the next 3 years. Choice of discipline influences the first job placement – after that you can usually pick your path. – to management, technical specialty, … your own business.
27
Feb 1, 2011MME Orientation 201127 Want to be a specialist? Start thinking about graduate school. –You get paid to be a grad student. –MSc degree is the entry level degree for some fields. –May need an MSc one day to be a P.Eng. Talk to Professors. Look into scholarships.
